Empowering Parents at CCP

Pursuing your education while pregnant or parenting is a meaningful and impressive achievement. At Community College of Philadelphia, we recognize that balancing academics with caregiving responsibilities can bring financial, logistical, physical and emotional challenges. Without the right support, these demands can feel overwhelming.

This page was created to make accessing support easier by bringing together helpful information, College policies, and campus and community resources for you and your family. Our goal is for every pregnant and parenting student to feel welcomed, supported, informed of their rights, and confident in navigating available resources. We are here to support you and your family—not just to get through college, but to thrive while you’re here.

Bringing Children on Campus

The College has recently updated its policy about the presence of minors on campus. Children must remain supervised at all times, be in a safe environment, and not disrupt the learning experience of others.

National Protections for Student Parents

Title IX

Title IX is a national law that protects students from sex-based discrimination, which includes discrimination based on pregnancy, childbirth, termination of pregnancy, false pregnancy, and recovery. Title IX grants students who fall under any of those categories the right to medically excused absence and access to accommodation. If those rights are violated, Title IX also protects your right to register a complaint and mandates that the College takes corrective action.

Learn more about Title IX protections.

Nursing and Lactation

In the workplace, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires employers to provide reasonable break time and a private, non-bathroom place for nursing parents to express breast milk during the workday for up to one year after the child’s birth.  Title IX similarly protects your right to pump or nurse at school. Learn more about your lactation rights.

In accordance with these protections, CCP provides four lactation rooms. See our CCP Resources section below for more information.
