Flexible Ways to Learn

At Community College of Philadelphia, you can take classes on campus, online, at scheduled times or on your own time. We offer six different class delivery formats so you can learn from anywhere, and you can choose the formats that best fit your needs. Explore our class delivery formats below.

Class Delivery Formats

Learn more about our class delivery formats so you can choose classes that meet your scheduling needs. Here are your options.

In-Person Classes

In-person classes meet at regularly scheduled days and times on campus.

When you are searching for classes, you'll see the days of the week, time of day, building location and room number under the “Meeting Times” column.

Online Asynchronous

Online asynchronous classes are taught entirely online and there are no scheduled meeting dates or times, but you must meet the due dates for online coursework. You are not expected to come to campus, but some classes may require in-person testing.

When you are searching for classes, these classes appear on the schedule as “Online Asynchronous” under the “Course Format” column.

Online Synchronous

Online synchronous classes are taught entirely online via live video conferencing (e.g., Zoom). Classes meet online during regularly scheduled days and times, which you can see under the “Meeting Times” column. These classes meet the same number of hours during a term as in-person classes, but you are not expected to come to campus unless your class requires in-person testing.

When you are searching for classes, these classes appear on the schedule as “Online Synchronous” under the “Course Format” column.

Hybrid Asynchronous

Hybrid asynchronous classes include a combination of mandatory in-person meeting times and asynchronous online work. The in-person classes meet at regularly scheduled days and times on campus, which you can see under the “Meeting Times” column. For the asynchronous online requirements, there are no specific days or times that you must be online, but you must meet the due dates for online coursework. These classes may include required in-person exams.

When you are searching for classes, these classes appear on the schedule as “Hybrid Asynchronous” under the “Course Format” column.

Hybrid Synchronous

Hybrid synchronous classes are a combination of mandatory in-person meeting times and mandatory online synchronous (e.g. Zoom) meeting times. The in-person classes meet at regularly scheduled days and times on campus, which you can see under the “Meeting Times” column when searching for classes. For the synchronous online requirements, classes meet online during regularly scheduled days and times, which you can also see under the “Meeting Times” column.

Hyflex

HyFlex classes are our most flexible class format. They are taught in all three course formats: in-person on campus, online synchronous (scheduled online video conferencing meetings) and asynchronous online (no scheduled meeting dates or times). You choose how to attend class on any given day. The synchronous online meetings are scheduled at the same time as the in-person class on campus, which you can see under the “Meeting Times” column when searching for classes. There are no scheduled meeting dates or times for the online asynchronous requirements, but you must meet the due dates for online coursework. Tests and exams are delivered online, but some classes may require in-person testing.
