Students take center stage as the cast of the beloved musical "The Wiz," bringing the magical journey down the Yellow Brick Road to life through song, dance, and dramatic performance. Participants develop acting techniques, vocal skills, and choreography while embodying iconic characters like Dorothy, the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion. This module emphasizes collaboration, creative expression, and confidence-building as students rehearse and perform in a full theatrical production. By opening night, students experience the transformative power of live theater and the joy of sharing their talents with an audience.
Students become the artistic visionaries behind "The Wiz," painting vibrant set backdrops and scenic elements that transport audiences to the magical Land of Oz. Participants explore color theory, perspective, and large-scale painting techniques while creating the visual world of Munchkinland, the Emerald City, and the Yellow Brick Road. This hands-on experience teaches students how visual design enhances storytelling and creates atmosphere in live theater productions. By the final performance, students see their artistic creations come alive on stage, understanding how visual arts are essential to theatrical magic.
Students merge technology and theater by designing and 3D printing custom props while programming LED lights in costumes to respond to human interaction and movement. Participants learn CAD design, additive manufacturing, and basic coding skills as they create interactive elements that enhance the magical atmosphere of "The Wiz." This innovative module demonstrates how modern technology can elevate traditional theater, from glowing ruby slippers to responsive costume elements that react to performers' actions. By integrating STEM skills with performing arts, students discover exciting career possibilities at the intersection of technology and creative entertainment.
Students apply geometry and measurement skills to construct sturdy, professional-quality backdrops and set elements that bring the world of "The Wiz" to three-dimensional life. Participants learn structural engineering principles, scale modeling, and carpentry techniques while building platforms, archways, and scenic structures that actors will use throughout the production. This hands-on module emphasizes problem-solving, precision, and teamwork as students transform mathematical concepts into functional theatrical architecture. By opening night, students see their engineered creations supporting the entire production, understanding how math and engineering are fundamental to bringing artistic visions to reality.
