Finding your career path can be a journey of self-discovery, and my experience reflects that. Initially, I attended Northeast High School, where I noticed a common issue among high schools—they often prioritize preparing students for college without emphasizing the importance of helping them find a job. Despite this, I began my academic journey as a biology major, knowing my interest in STEM and my desire to potentially build a career in this field. During my time at Community College of Philadelphia (CCP), I had the opportunity to work in the physics lab and the budget office through work-study positions. These experiences allowed me to gradually realize my passion for working in teams and helping others. It was through these roles that I discovered my favorite thing to do—work collaboratively and assist people. This realization led me to switch my major to Biological Sciences. I chose this path because I still wanted to pursue STEM but in an educational context where I could teach and help others understand complex biology topics. This decision was not only about my passion for the subject but also about my desire to make a positive impact on others' lives through education.

What's your favorite CCP memory?
So most of the DVP majors worked during the day and went to class at night. Most of us had that hustle & bustle mentality. That gave us very little time to relax and remember that we’re human and sometimes we need a break. We used to have some of the best food trucks in town and everyday just before class, we would gather out in the hallway and dine together and laugh a joke as we all would gaze into the view that we had of the city 🌃 lit up at night. We used to say that one day we’ll all be shining just like those stars. Reminded us that we were still human and not the machines we felt like. Moments like that really got us through.

There are many memories at CCP I can recollect. My favorite memories at CCP is talking to my professors about the golden age of television and remembering many of the TV hosts they grew up with like Dick Clark, Bob Barker, and Merv Griffin. Another memory is getting 2 articles published for The Vanguard. One is about The Kansas City Chiefs and the other is about JFK Stadium.

One of my favorite memories at CCP was returning after COVID-19 and being back in the classroom with my peers again, learning as a group. The sense of camaraderie and shared purpose was palpable. It felt like a collective victory over the challenges we faced, and being together in person made the learning experience even more enriching. I started my journey many years ago, when my children were young; however, I had to put my studies on hold because my husband became sick. I had the intentions of returning within a couple years, but then life happened. So, 12 years later here I am! I'm finishing what I started. Since returning to my studies, Covid happened, and I had to adjust to online courses. My present career as a licensed beautician/barber and customer service coordinator position was also at a halt because of covid. That didn't stop me because of the other opportunities that are always obtainable. I studied for my CDL and became a school bus driver which I truly love. Along with driving the bus, I'm still doing hair, taking care of elderly, and pursuing my degree & medical coding career. After graduation, it's also possible that I'll be taking my PA Real Estate license, since I also completed the course work required. Who says you can't do it all!

What's your favorite CCP memory?
Even though I have many great memories of CCP, my favorite one is making a difference for a fellow student. I loved helping other students, if they needed it. Her gratitude after passing her course was a priceless gift that I'll never forget.

My Criminal Justice teacher, Professor Judy Cruz-Ransom is my favorite memory at CCP. I also have to mention Professor Jaylen Warren. Professor Warren reminded me to keep trying to succeed and practice makes perfect. Professor Cruz-Ransom made sure to remind us about all the job opportunities that are out here.
