ANTONIO
I ended up here at CCP [Community College of Philadelphia] because I didn’t have a smooth transition into Temple—that’s where I wanted to go. I wasn’t given a straight-forward decline or acceptance into Temple, and at that time I was in a program that didn’t allow me to wait that long to hear a final decision. My program presented CCP—it was a quick way to get me started with building my credits. I saw they offered art and design, graphic design, it was way cheaper so I was like, ‘I can go to CCP!’ I also heard about CME [Center for Male Engagement] in the Student Life Building, and it went on from there. It was full of brothers like me—it felt like a home just to be there.

CCP [Community College of Philadelphia] came to my high school. I graduated from Agora Cyber Charter School. I was out of school for a year, and then I came to CCP because it was cheaper and a fast way to get acclimated to the college life. I took two English classes here and then was nominated to go to the honor society here—that’s why I’m in the Liberal Arts - Honors program. I’ll be graduating with honors and I’m part of Phi Theta Kappa [Honor Society].

So I decided to come three years ago. I worked really, really hard because my English was really bad and also because I didn’t know anyone here. I didn’t know anything about community college. I didn’t know we have the opportunity to get free education or finish late. Pretty much I thought my destiny was just work, but then I started to figure out information about it. I decided to apply

I’m originally from Peru, but I decided to come here just to have a new experience. What I really like about here is that I also have the experience being with different kinds of people—not just people from America, but from different kinds of backgrounds. I think that was one of the most attractive features of the city overall. People are always friendly, and I really learned to like it a lot.
