This course is an introduction to current research in and practical application of alternative and renewable energy technologies focusing on practical energy conversion to meet the constantly evolving demand for sustainable development. Established energy systems investigated in the course include wind turbines, solar thermal and photovoltaic (PV) systems, geothermal heat transfer, renewable biofuels and Building Automation Systems (BAS). Students learn to differentiate among alternative solutions that can replace conventional energy systems and perform trials to explore the practical applications of alternative energy. Students use building energy modeling software and spreadsheets to analyze proposed alternative energy systems.
