Placement Tests — Level One Category

If you placed into Level 1 Reading, Level 1 Writing or into the Level 1 Reading and Writing category on the College’s placement test, you need to improve your reading and/or writing skills, retake the College placement test to improve to Level 2, and then start Community College of Philadelphia classes.

What are my options?

There are two ways to improve your skills and earn an opportunity to retake the College's placement test. Both are free.

Workshop Online Program
5 Weeks (30 hours of instruction) Complete 40 hours of online work
Traditional class that meets 2 or 3 times per week Nontraditional — you set your own schedule
Interaction with an instructor and classmates Independent — no instructor
Scheduled and structured Flexible and self-paced
Probably the best choice if you enjoy interacting with a teacher and classmates and like a more traditional classroom environment. Probably the best choice if you need a flexible schedule, possess excellent computer skills and excel at working independently.

Can I do both the workshop and the online program?

No. This is an either/or decisionchoose either the workshop option or the online option. After you are enrolled in the program you have chosen, there’s no going back.

What do I do if I placed into BOTH Reading and Writing workshops?

If you placed into Both Reading and Writing workshops, you work on the writing first. If you successfully complete the writing workshop, retest and improve your performance in the Writing section, you are given a second chance at the Reading Comprehension section. If your reading skills improve, you need not enroll in the Reading workshop. If your reading placement does not improve to Level 2 or higher, you must then enroll in the Online Reading workshop. So it may be smart to brush up your reading skills in addition to the 40 hours of writing.

How much time do I have to finish the online workshop?

Since your access code will expire 10 weeks from the day you first log in, you have 10 weeks to complete 40 hours of work. Note your expiration datewhen the code expires, you will not be given another one. Because skill levels differ, the course the path builder creates for each student will be different. The only criteria to be eligible to retest is that you complete 40 hours. Whether you cover 40 topics in that time, or 80, doesn’t matter. Take as long as you need to complete each activity and test. The 40 hours is what matters.

What happens if I fail to complete the 40 hours in 10 weeks?

If you are unable to complete 40 hours of work in the 10 weeks, you will not be given a new access code. You will not be able to retest. You will be directed to Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes outside of Community College of Philadelphia. After completing the ABE classes, you can return to the College to retest.
