English and Math Placement


The purpose of student placement at Community College of Philadelphia in English and Math courses is to place students in the courses most appropriate to their level of preparation. Placement can be satisfied by submitting your high school transcripts and having a GPA above 2.74, having SAT or ACT scores above the minimum requirement, and other methods, outlined below. If you are not able to satisfy placement through one of these options, you will need to take a placement test.

Placement in Math and English Courses 

For placement in English and Math courses, students will be placed based upon the following criteria: 

  • Unweighted High School GPA - English placements for the Fall 2021 term:
    • English 098 and English 099 - Developmental English – Writing and Reading
      • HS GPA between 2.75 to 2.89.
    • English 098 and English 101 – College Level English with Writing Support
      • HS GPA between 2.9 to 3.19.
    • English 101 – College Level English
      • HS GPA between 3.20 and above
  • Unweighted High School GPA - Math placements for the Fall 2021 term:
    • FNMT 016 (Arithmetic) or FNMT 019 (Introductory Mathematics) Developmental Math
      • HS GPA 2.89 and below
    • FNMT 017 (Elementary Algebra) Developmental Math
      • HS GPA 2.90 to 3.04
    • FNMT 118 (Intermediate Algebra) College Math
      • HS GPA 3.05 to 3.29
    • Math 161 (Pre-Calculus) College Math
      • HS GPA 3.30 and above with a C or higher in Algebra II or higher level math (If no Algebra or higher level math, placement will be in FNMT 118)
    • Math 171 (Calculus I) College Math
      • HS GPA 3.50 and above with a C or higher in Trigonometry or Calculus (If no Trigonometry or Calculus, placement will be in FNMT 118)

Placement Tests

By taking the ACCUPLACER tests, applicants will be placed in the most appropriate English and Math courses as indicated by their ACCUPLACER test results. 

Due to rising Covid cases in Philadelphia and throughout the region, Community College of Philadelphia will operate on a fully remote schedule through February 14, 2022. In-person testing is not available at this time.
Currently you have two online options for taking the ACCUPLACER test. For both options you must have a desktop or laptop computer with a webcam and audio capabilities. Tablets, chrome books and cell phones are not compatible with the test.
Option 1:

Test 24/7 at your convenience using Examity, an automated proctoring service.

Option 2:

Test online with a CCP proctor – this option is best for students who might need a little help accessing the test online.

In order to test with a CCP proctor, send an email to assessmentcenter@ccp.edu. Please include your full name, J number, date of birth, and phone number. We’ll get back to you with further instructions and dates to take the placement test.

Listed below are the guidelines for applicants who must take the ACCUPLACER placement test:
  • Applicants with a HS GPA of 2.74 and below
  • GED students
  • Students who cannot obtain a high school transcript
  • English as a Second Language (ESL) students will take their ACCUPLACER placement and be placed in Pre-ESL or ESL courses

Students can alternatively submit the following to meet placement:

  • SAT score: A minimum score of 560 in English and 510 in mathematics, taken within the last five years.
  • ACT score: A minimum of 21 in English and 17 in mathematics, taken within the last five years.
  • AP English Lit/Com Exam: A score of 4 or 5 on the AP Exam
  • AP Calculus AB or Calculus BC exam: A score of 4 or 5 on the exam, taken within the last five years.
  • IBT (internet based TOEFL): A minimum score of 77 overall and a 20 in writing, taken within the last two years.
  • IELTS score: A minimum of 6.0 overall and a 6.0 in writing, taken within the last two years.
  • An official transcript from an accredited U.S. college or university: indicating you have earned a U.S. college degree or have passed college-level English or math with a grade of “C” or higher.
  • All documents (transcripts and test scores) submitted for placement should be sent to the Transfer Credit and Placement Office at traneval@ccp.edu.
