The Roaries

The 2022 Roaries

What are we celebrating and why?

The Roaries capture the spirit of community that has kept our College, neighbors, friends and families together throughout the pandemic. While the pandemic has  limited in-person service opportunities, students have gone above and beyond to serve our community! So, instead of hosting our traditional student leadership awards, we’re hosting the Roaries again this year so we can honor and celebrate all of our students who are leading, serving, and volunteering in their communities and for those around them.

Our students were encouraged to upload a 10-second video of themselves or their peers performing or retelling an act of goodwill and/or service. Each will be awarded a Roarie, a beautifully designed digital certificate to be downloaded and framed. We know good is being done by so many of our students and we want to recognize their efforts. Thank you to the many staff and faculty who took the time to leave a note on the Kudoboard.

Celebrate Our Students

Student Leadership

We also want to take this opportunity to recognize those students who participate in student leadership development, civic engagement, and the many student clubs and organizations at Community College of Philadelphia. The Center for Student Leadership Development helps students discover new ways to lead, find ways to be involved and grow as a member of the College community. Numerous opportunities are available at the College for developing leadership instinct and skills. Seizing these opportunities enhances students' character, community involvement and professional growth.

Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society (PTK), Rho Upsilon Chapter

Phi Theta Kappa is the international scholastic honor society for community and junior colleges, which exists to:

  • Recognize and encourage scholarship
  • Serve colleges and their communities
  • Cultivate leadership and fellowship

Community College of Philadelphia’s Rho Upsilon chapter invites eligible students currently enrolled in associate degree programs to become members. Eligibility is dependent upon credits completed and grades achieved at the College.

The Student Leadership Society: Online Student Leadership Skills Certificate

The goal of Philadelphia L.E.A.D.S. (Leadership + Education + Achievement + Diversity = Success), the College’s Student Leadership Society, is to empower students to identify inherent gifts and talents, develop leadership abilities, actualize visions and realize career goals, all while positively contributing to the community.

This is achieved through five sessions, each featuring a guest speaker to highlight one of the "exemplary practices" outlined by Kouzes' and Posner's Leadership Challenge and The Student Leadership Challenge as well as spotlight the cultural theme of the month. Students who attend all five sessions receive a Platinum Student Leadership Certificate, students who attend three or four sessions receive a Gold Student Leadership Certificate and students who attend at least one session receive a Silver Student Leadership Certificate. Philadelphia L.E.A.D.S uses experiential student learning theories.  The Emerging Leaders, the newly enrolled student leaders, and the Platinum and Gold Leaders have had the opportunity to put their leadership skills to the test outdoors.
