A Model for Supporting Diverse Women Students: Integrating the Women’s Outreach & Advocacy Center into the Campus Environment
A goal of campus-based women’s centers is to offer support, information and resources to a diverse women student population on many issues. The center is designed to empower women to persist, achieve academically and prepare for life outside the campus environment. Many women’s centers provide a programmatic response to students’ needs with emphasis on eliminating oppression and discrimination based on sex, race, age, class, and religious and sexual orientation. Despite realized successes, women’s centers struggle with organizational structures, budget constraints, visibility issues and fluctuating attendance at center events.
The purpose of this Diversity Dialogue is to raise awareness about the Community College of Philadelphia Women’s Outreach & Advocacy Center (WOAC). The WOAC goal is to highlight promising practices, and suggest strategies for future collaborative efforts between the Center and the College family in an effort to increase female student persistence. This discussion will feature several students who will share the positive impact that their involvement with the Women’s Center has had on their academic, personal and social lives.
Please join us Wednesday, Nov. 13, from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m., in Room C2-5. A boxed lunch will be provided for the first 15 attendees. If you have any questions, please contact the Office of Diversity and Equity at extension 8039.
