Elaine Del Valle

Named 2013 “TRENDSETTER” at the Multicultural Media Forum, Soulfrito Arts Foundation “Inspiring Artist,” CNN “Woman of Note” and New York Times “Triumph,” Elaine Del Valle has enjoyed a lucrative voiceover and commercial career for over a decade. Striving to free herself from the industry’s commercial label, she wrote and developed her solo show and coming of age story, “Brownsville Bred,” which won the 2012 HOLA Award for Outstanding Solo Performance. Elaine will discuss issues that continue to impact Latinos and others, and present three episodes of the comedy web series Reasons Y I’m Single.

Rev. Tommy Forester serves as the College Connect Pastor where he oversees the College Connect Ministries of the Epiphany Fellowship Church. He is passionate about seeing multiethnic college ministries thrive in and throughout the urban church. His discussion informs and produces change in all avenues of life on campus, in the community and around the globe.

Understanding and Managing Conflict

Conflict is often viewed negatively, but it can be a catalyst for positive change and a route to greater awareness. And when approached in a respectful, positive way, conflict provides an opportunity to strengthen the bond between two people or groups. In this presentation, we’ll define conflict, consider how conflict is important and learn how the environment around us influences conflict. We’ll also explore the five styles of conflict resolution.

This session will look at the challenge of student attrition beyond the data in a holistic manner from student, faculty and administrator perspective. Concepts such as a fixed or growth mindset, how it influences the way professors instruct, and how students learn and persist will be explored.

Warrior Writers

This interactive event is hosted by Warrior Writers, a veteran-focused community arts organization that offers free workshops for veterans to explore creativity. In this session, we will explore veterans’ experiences using artwork as a way to open up conversation and promote understanding. We will discuss Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and ways to have healthy interactions between veterans and civilians. Both veterans and civilians are encouraged to attend.
