FILM SERIES: Grave of the Fireflies
Japan in War and Peace is organized with introductions provided by Akiko More, Foreign Language Department/Japanese and Professor David Prejsnar, History, Philosophy and Religious Studies. Grave of the Fireflies is a 1988 Japanese animated drama written and directed by Isao Takahata and animated by Studio Ghibli. It is commonly considered an anti-war film, but this interpretation has been challenged by some critics and by the director.

Families and Cuba: How Will the Change in U.S. Relations with Cuba Affect Families Both in Cuba and in the U.S.? What is Cuba’s Relationship with the Family of American States?
Dr. Lisa Jarvinen, Associate Professor of History at LaSalle University will discuss Cuba, Cubans and Cuban Americans, and the family of American nations. Dr. Jarvinen has recently traveled to Cuba and has taught and written about Latin American history for many years.

Theo Atkinson has more than 20 years of diverse culinary experience as executive chef of Eulogy Belgian Tavern, Beneluxx Tasting Room and Bierstube German Tavern; head chef at Big Fish and Chart House restaurants; and as manager of Giordano produce in the 1990s.

Belgian Meatballs: Beef-Veal-Pork blend with four herbs and spices

Family Cultural Day: Salon @ WERC
Interactive Salon featuring poetry, singing, storytelling, dancing and drumming that celebrates the bonds that hold us together — intergenerational relationships and family heritage. The For Women Collective will emcee and provide performances. Troupe Da Da will return with their vibrant dance and drum workshop. A special family-style open mic session will provide opportunities for attendees to share their multinational stories of struggle and overcome.

The Peony Symphony: Dancing Petals to the Paths of of Art, Music, Poetry, Philosophy and Calligraphy
In this talk, Dr. Michelle Cai Sun, associate professor of English at Community College of Philadelphia, will highlight this floral motif and its diversified symbolism through art, music, philosophy (Daoism) and poetry to bring humanity to ponder on the transience of time and the transcendence of love, life and generative power.

Religion in the World of The Tale of the Heike
Dr. Royall Tyler is an esteemed translator of Japanese literature, acclaimed for his translations of the Noh plays, The Tale of the Genji and The Tale of the Heike. A descendant of the American playwright Royall Tyler (1757-1826), he was born in London, England, and grew up in America and France. Tyler has taught at Australia National University, The Ohio State University, University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Oslo, Norway. He resides in rural New South Wales, Australia.

As we celebrate families from all over the world, let us take some time to meet and learn from our fellow students who have left their families to travel and experience both the Philadelphia family/community and the family/community here at Community College.

International Benjamin Franklin Parkway Walking Tour led by Often called the Champs Élysée of Philadelphia, the multiple design influences on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway are international in scope. Join professor Michael Stern on a walking tour that will visit a number of the important buildings including the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul (which reflects the 16th century churches of Rome) and the new Barnes Foundation (which features, a cutting edge contemporary building that draws on African themes for many of its design elements.) Wear comfortable walking shoes, and bring an umbrella in case of rain.
