Biomedical Equipment Technology II Proficiency Certificate

Biomedical Equipment Technicians (BMETs) are professionals that work in health care settings to test, maintain and repair medical equipment, such as ECG and blood pressure monitors, defibrillators, ventilators and infusion pumps, among others. BMETs typically work for hospitals, medical device manufacturers or third party companies that provide service to hospitals. To be successful in this field, BMETs need to have an understanding of the operation and functions of a range of medical devices and their clinical applications, and the ability to test medical device operation to a set of specifications. Students who complete the proficiency certificate for Biomedical Equipment Technology I will be able to function as entry-level BMETs. Students may continue their education by earning the Biomedical Technology II Proficiency Certificate, which will enable them to troubleshoot more complex equipment problems and address equipment problems that are network/wireless related. The increased qualifications will enhance the potential for advancement. All credits earned toward the BMET proficiency certificates can be applied to earning an Associate of Applied Science degree in Biomedical Equipment Technology.

Upon receiving your proficiency certificate, you may enter the workforce, or your courses may be applied to the Applied Science and Engineering Technology associate degree program, and then transfer to a four-year college.

From the Field: Women in BMET

Adriana Gibson, Biomedical Equipment Technician at St. Joseph Mercy

"While being a stay home mom, I decided to get a college degree. With my background in electronics, Biomedical Equipment Technology seemed a good fit. Within few months after graduation with an associate degree, I got my first job as a Biomedical Equipment Technician. Working in this field is never a boring job. The verity of equipment is almost overwhelming. I love the continual education part of it. Every time I work on a new piece of equipment, I learn more about the technologies available to improve patient care."

Jennifer Collins, Director of Clinical Engineering at Mercy Health

"Everything about this field is exciting! I get to play with tools and the latest technology. I get to fix equipment that can have a huge impact on patients. It's an amazing feeling when I fix something and the Doctor/Nurse/Tech gets their diagnostic equipment back so they can get the patient on their healing journey. As a leader, I get to help guide the team in doing their very best, every day."
