Supporting Student Needs

At the 2019 Black & Gold Gala, retired Comcast executive John Alchin was inspired by the students who shared their stories about the obstacles they had to overcome to earn their degrees. John and his husband Hal Marryatt, a retired physician, visited campus and learned about the College’s Single Stop program. Afterwards, they made a charitable contribution to help meet students’ basic needs and increase college persistence.

“We are particularly impressed and moved by the impact of the services provided by Single Stop. And now, because of the pandemic, we see that our support is even more valuable.”

Ann Hill Pay It Forward Scholarship Endowment

As part of a $300,000 donation from the Ann Hill Donor Advised Fund on behalf of the Hill family, the Ann Hill Pay It Forward Scholarship Endowment was established. The scholarship will provide emergency funding to students facing unexpected financial hardships or educational expenses. The scholarship endowment is named after the late Ann Hill, the daughter of the late Louis G. Hill, former Common Pleas Court Judge and state senator. Known for her generosity and determination, Ann passed away in November 2019. Her family hopes her “Pay It Forward” scholarship will help students. The Hill family also generously supported the redesigned Learning and Library Commons.

"Without emergency funds, I would not have been able to finish the semester due to financial issues. I was so grateful for the aid. It made me one semester closer to following my dream!"

The College is committed to addressing the many circumstances beyond the classroom that can be roadblocks for students in their academic journeys. With the growing issues of food insecurity and financial hardships, the Student Care Network, Single Stop, and Snack Rack Food Pantry provide support services for students, including connecting them with emergency funds, meals, social services, and public benefits. Last year, Single Stop assisted 2,139 students, supporting them with $554,661 in cash and noncash benefits. Over 750 students received emergency funds. The Snack Rack Food Pantry, which relies on the support of donors, helped hundreds of students with meals each month.

The Foundation raised over $450,000 to support emergency funds, Single Stop, and the Snack Rack Food Pantry, with donors coming together to assist students and make a difference when they need it most.

Caring a great deal about the impact of poverty in Philadelphia, Perry Watts and her husband generously supported the Student Care Network for a second consecutive year.

Pincus Family Foundation doubled their holiday gift to support the emergency fund, providing $75 each to 200 students to combat food insecurity.

The Scholler Foundation once again awarded a grant to Single Stop, bringing their total support to over $150,000.

Lindy Family Trust made a generous first-time gift to support student scholarships and emergency needs, helping students secure books, meals, and other necessities.
