WHO & WHAT: Did you ever wonder about the science behind automobiles? Did you ever want to build your own car? Philadelphia students in grade 6, 7 and 8 will be doing just that at Community College of Philadelphia’s first Science, Engineering, Technology and Math (STEM) summer camp.

The camp will help students prepare for the high-tech jobs of tomorrow. Innovations in the automotive industry have transformed what it means to be an automotive technician. A trade that was once mechanical is primarily technical today, and requires skilled computer users and good mathematicians. For one week, students will be able to explore the science, technology and math behind self-driving cars and alternative fuels, and how they contribute to a cleaner, greener planet. The week will be filled with interactive experiences and informative field trips that will demonstrate the different modes of transportation at several locations, including:

  • The Simeone Antique Automotive Museum
  • Philadelphia International Airport
  • Philadelphia Regional Port Authority (Tioga Marine Terminal)
  • Philadelphia’s vehicle fleet, including police cruisers, buses, SUVs, jeeps and motorcycles

Students will also learn how to build a rocket-powered dragster to compete against fellow campers!

WHEN: Monday, Aug. 14 at 9 a.m. – The first day of camp, students will learn how cars work (engines in particular), and what fossil fuels and alternative fuels are.
WHERE: Automotive Technology Center, 4731 Ludlow Street, part of the Community College of Philadelphia West Regional Center. Off of 48th Street, between Market and Chestnut Streets.
VISUALS: Instructors in the auto shop showing students how engines work, various automobiles, including alternative fuel cars.
