MEDIA ADVISORY
PHILADELPHIA – Community College of Philadelphia will host an online meet-and-greet welcoming some of our first students to be enrolled as Octavius Catto Scholars, along with guests including Mayor James Kenney, on Thursday, Jan. 21, at 10 a.m.
The Octavius Catto Scholarship, an anti-poverty initiative supported by the City of Philadelphia, provides first-time, full-time College students with an opportunity to eliminate barriers to degree completion. The scholarship covers last-dollar funding after financial aid; extensive support services for academic success; and costs associated with food and books. The first cohort of Scholars began classes today, Jan. 19, the first day of the spring 2021 semester.
“Through the Catto Scholarship, we can secure a brighter future for our citizens and our city,” said Dr. Donald Guy Generals, College president. “Making higher education more accessible will help break the cycle of poverty that affects so many Philadelphians. A degree brings the benefits of expanded career options, family-sustaining wages and financial security. Education has the power to change lives. With this event, we celebrate these students and this opportunity to effect change.”
The event will feature remarks by Mayor Kenney, Dr. Generals, one of our Catto Scholars and others, and will end with the Scholars opening up welcome packages they received from the College.
