The in-person event will introduce male students of color in grades six to eight to the endless career possibilities in the world of medicine
PHILADELPHIA – Community College of Philadelphia announced that it will host its Minority Men in Medicine event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20 in The Great Hall, Room S2-19 of the Winnet Student Life Building, 1700 Spring Garden St., Philadelphia, PA 19130. The main entrance to the Winnet Student Life Building is on 17th Street between Spring Garden and Callowhill Streets.
The panel will begin at 10 a.m. and students will participate in hands-on activities beginning at 11:30 a.m.
The in-person event will introduce male students of color in grades six to eight to a diverse panel of male doctors and medical school students to encourage them to pursue a career in the field and help close the achievement gap among minority males in medicine.
According to a recent study published by the University of California, Los Angeles, the proportion of Black physicians in the United States has increased by only 4 percentage points over the last 120 years. However, the share of doctors who identify as Black men – 2.8 percent – has remained unchanged since 1940. The report also points to significant income gaps between white and Black male physicians.
With the number of Black and Latino doctors remaining below their respective share in the general U.S. population, even the National Academy of Medicine is calling the situation a national crisis.
During this event, students will be able to hear directly from a panel of male doctors and medical school students of color on their journey into the profession. Students will also participate in hands-on activities and be able to ask panelists questions one-on-one.
Activities include: learning how medical engineers help rehabilitate people with injuries; witness how alcohol impairs the body by putting on goggles that simulate intoxication; learn about the strength and capacity of the heart and lungs; and participate in CPR demonstrations with mannequins.
