Community College of Philadelphia to Host 23rd Annual Fox Rothschild Law and Society Week

The theme for this year’s Law and Society Week is Reform, Reframe and Reclaim 

PHILADELPHIA – Community College of Philadelphia announced that it will host its 23rd annual Fox Rothschild Law and Society Week from Monday, Feb. 28 to Friday, March. 4. Organized by the Fox Rothschild Center for Law and Society, this week-long series of thought-provoking workshops, lectures, trainings and panel discussions is dedicated to facilitating open discussion on a range of important and timely topics to the College community.  

This year’s theme for Law and Society Week is “Reform, Reframe and Reclaim.” Sessions include discussions on human trafficking and gun violence, easing the transition to college for formerly justice-involved individuals, as well as examining how children not only learn about race, but apply their ideas of race onto others.  

All sessions will be held virtually and are free and open to the public. Advance registration is required. Media are highly encouraged to attend the following events:  

Law and Society Week Opening Ceremony and Keynote Address 
10:20 a.m. Monday, Feb. 28, via Zoom 

Kristal Turner-Childs, deputy commissioner of Staff for the Pennsylvania State Police, will kick off the College’s 23rd annual Fox Rothschild Law and Society Week. College President Dr. Donald “Guy” Generals will provide opening remarks.  

Human Trafficking Presentation 
9:40 a.m. Tuesday, March. 1, via Zoom 

This session will provide an overview of the various types of human trafficking around the world, and the ways in which we can help recognize and prevent it. Facilitators include Dr. Faye Allard, associate professor and head of the College’s Social Science Department and Nicole Vadino, associate professor of Social Science 

Gun Violence Presentation 
11:20 a.m. Tuesday, March. 1, via Zoom

This session will include a screening of the powerful documentary “Numb to Normalcy” which highlights the impact of gun violence in the City of Philadelphia and offers perspectives from three Community College of Philadelphia students. Facilitators include Dr. Kathleen Murphey, associate professor of English and Tamara Russell, host of Revive Radio, also known as Proof of Consciousness (POC). 

I Am More Reentry Engagement Program 
10:20 a.m. Wednesday, March. 2, via Zoom

Facilitated by Derrick Perkins, director of Student Transition Success at the College, this session will explore the College’s rebranded reentry support program: I Am More Reentry Engagement Program. The program aims to better connect formerly justice-involved individuals to and through the educational pipeline.  

Leading Ladies in Law; a Panel Discussion  
11:20 a.m. Tuesday, March. 1, via Zoom 

Facilitated by Malika Rahman, assistant professor of Criminal Justice, this panel discussion will highlight the unique perspective women bring to the judicial branch. Students, faculty, and staff will be able to hear from experienced judges who’ve excelled professionally while paving the way for others to the same.  

Panelists include: Honorable Lori A. Dumas, Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court; Honorable Sheila Woods-Skipper, Administrative Judge, Orphans’ Court; Honorable Lisette Shirdan-Harris, Administrative Judge, Trial Division, Court of Common Pleas; and Honorable Karen Simmons, Philadelphia Municipal Court Judge
