PHILADELPHIA – Community College of Philadelphia announced that it will host an Enough Is Enough teach-in session to celebrate Black Music Month at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 16. Titled The Sound of Music, the virtual forum will explore the ways in which music has been used to advance social justice through both a local and national lens.
The event will be co-moderated by Dr. David E. Thomas, vice president for Strategic Initiatives and Community Engagement, and Paul J. Geissinger, associate professor, Music department head, and director of Spring Garden Records – the College’s official record label. Welcome remarks will be provided by College President Dr. Donald Guy Generals.
Attendees will learn how they can amplify their voice through music from special guests including Kenneth Gamble, award-winning singer, songwriter, producer, Black Music Month co-founder, and the founder and CEO of Universal Companies; Jamar Jones, musical director, composer, and CEO of Jamar Jones Institute; and Ruth Naomi Floyd, a vocalist, composer, and photographer who serves as the director of Jazz Studies at Cairn University and an adjunct and artist in residence at Temple University’s Boyer College of Music and Dance.
Attendees will also enjoy musical selections from Spring Garden Records, Jamar Jones, and Ruth Naomi Floyd.
This Enough Is Enough teach-in session will also celebrate the one-year anniversary of the series which the College launched in June 2020 following the police-involved death of George Floyd. Following Floyd’s death, Dr. Generals asked the College community to commit to eradicating ideologies that perpetuate systemic racism through education, training and action.
