The partnership seeks to address the truck driver shortage across the country

PHILADELPHIA – Community College of Philadelphia (The College) is partnering with Ancora Education (Ancora) to launch a non-credit Commercial Truck Driving (CDL) program. Classes will be available through the College’s Corporate Solutions department and are set to begin in September.

Prompted by the high demand for truck drivers across the nation, the College reached out to Ancora to launch and manage a CDL program that complies with the new Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) rules established by the Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration (FMCSA), which went into effect in February 2022. Participants in this 160-hour program can earn their CDL license in as little as four weeks.

“The need for professional truck drivers shows no signs of slowing,” said Carol J. de Fries, College vice president for Workforce & Economic Innovation. “We’ve seen a substantial demand in the Philadelphia market for this kind of training, and by offering CDL at CCP, we’re able to serve both the students who are interested in starting this career as well as our local business partners who are struggling to find enough drivers for their workforce.”

As a consequence of the significant shortage of truck drivers across the country, there has been a severe impact on the nation’s supply chains while companies scramble to maintain their current driver workforce. The College recognized that this shortage presented an opportunity for Pennsylvanians to launch an in-demand, well-paying career in as little as four weeks. In 2021, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the mean annual pay for heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers was $50,340.
