Several CCP teams garnering recognition

The sports teams at Community College of Philadelphia have been performing at a high level. The Lions’ cross country and the men’s and women’s basketball teams are helping to put the school’s athletic on the local and national map among junior colleges.CCP won the Women’s EPAC (Eastern Pennsylvania Athletic Conference) Division III Cross Country Championship on Sunday hosted by Luzerne County Community College. The quintette was led by sophomore Elizabeth Chukwuezi who finished sixth overall. She was followed by Sakinah Brice, Shardenai Davis and Tianna Jeffcoat. Lions head cross country coach Robert Taylor was named Coach of the Year.The men’s basketball team at CCP is ranked 10th nationally in the NCJAA’s (National Junior College Athletic Association) Division III. CCP recently defeated sixth-ranked Northampton Community College 80-69 on the road. The Lions have a sensational 10-1 record.“We are off to a good start,” said Joe Rome, CCP’s head coach in a statement. “We are pretty talented and athletic which helps us to get off to a pretty good start. The guys seems to be playing well together. They like each other. We are mostly freshmen. ”The team’s leading scorers are Tyreek Johnson (17.7 ppg) and Cameron Gardner (10.5 ppg.).The women’s team has a 7-3 record. Elan Wali, a Bishop McDevitt product, was named the EPAC Player of the Week. Wali had 19 points, 23 rebounds, 10 assists, 6 steals and a block against Valley Forge Junior College.The Lions’ top scorers are Cassandra Colon (21.5 ppg) and Cyanie Hull-Smith (19.1 ppg). Colon is third in the division in scoring while Hull-Smith is fourth.Aminata Gackou leads the division in rebounding (12.5 rpg) and is third in blocked shots (4.3 bpg).
