Leading the Way

L-LuckersLynette Luckers is changing the city by leading at work and in the community.

As a popular assistant professor in the Counseling department, Luckers connects easily with diverse students and communities. “She is an amazing professor, and always makes sure to connect her classroom activities to the real world,” said Monique Gilchrist, lead Allied Health counselor at the College. “Students seeks her out even when the course is completed.”

Service-learning is deeply embedded in the curricular fabric of the College, but Luckers takes teaching far beyond the classroom walls. She runs a nonprofit that she founded after the death of her mother from kidney disease, the Marion Luckers Kidney Foundation, and is a tireless volunteer at church and in the community.

KYW Newsradio recently recognized Luckers as one of five honorees making differences in their communities, all under the age of 40, in the 2017 Women’s Achievement Awards competition. The women were honored at the annual event June 28. Leading up to the ceremony, their stories were featured on-air and online as part of WOGL’s Breakfast Club host Marilynn Russell’s Remarkable Women series.
