MERIDA, MEXICO SAMPLE SCHEDULE
SPRING 2009

*Note: Days and visits may not match up precisely. Changes and adjustments should be expected.
Evening festivities are abundant. Check out the Plaza Mayor as well as the local concert halls.

DAY 1
Meet at the airport Domestic Check-in Counter and fly to Merida.

Check into hotel and explore downtown Merida before dinner.

7:30 PM—meet in the lobby for group dinner.

Enjoy the rest of the evening on your own.

DAY 2
9:00 AM—Lecture on Uxmál and other Maya issues and sites.

9:45 AM—Visit Uxmal and see (and climb!) such wonders as the Pyramid of the Magician and the Great Pyramid.

4:00 PM—Depart Uxmal and return to Merida

Enjoy an evening of dinner and festivities on your own or with friends.


DAY 3
9:00 AM—Meet in hotel meeting room for a talk regarding some of the history on Castro Pacheco’s murals at the Governor’s Palace.

9:40 AM—Meet in the lobby for the short walk to the Governor’s Palace. Guide will lead a visually rich, interesting, and informative history of the Yucatán.

11:30 AM—Lunch on your own.

2 :00 PM—Visit one of several Art Museums within the town square of Merida.

Enjoy an evening of dinner and festivities on your own.


DAY 4
8:30 AM—Lecture on Liberation Theology and visit to Dzibilchaltún.

9:05 AM—Depart for Dzibilchaltún.

10:00 AM—Tour of Dzibilchaltún Museum, Mayan site (including the Temple of the Seven Dolls) and famed cenote. Don't forget to bring your bathing suits! Grab a quick bite to eat.

2:00 PM—Depart for Chablekal. Arrive at base community and listen / speak with one of its members who will talk about current Mexican life and politics.

4:00 PM—Depart for Merida.

DAY 5
9:00 AM—Rise early and walk to one of serveral markets in Merida (including the famed downtown mercado). Visit the local vendors, observe how they make corn tortillas, grab a bite to eat (and sample some fresh squeezed jugo de naranja (orange juice).

3:00 PM—Meet in front of the Cathedral Central for a brief tour. The cathedral is fairly simple in structure, partly because of the influence of the Franciscans and also because during the Mexican Revolution some of the objects were destroyed because many people saw the church as an oppressive institution.

Enjoy the rest of the day on your own.

DAY 6
8:30 AM—Lecture on colonial history and Mexican poetry, especially Mayan influence.

9:15 AM—Depart for Agricultural School. The purpose of the school is to help keep the Mayan culture and language alive as well as training people from the villages viable farming skills so that they can survive.

12:00 PM—Visit to Mani and other Mayan villages (tour of village markets and Franciscan churches that were built during the colonial period.

3:00 PM—Lunch as a group in Mani.

DAY 7
8:00 AM—Depart for Chichen Itza

10:30 AM—Arrive at Chichen Itza and begin tour. See such wonders as El Castillo, the famed ball court, and more!

1:00 PM—Lunch on your own as well as additional time exploring the site.

4:00 PM—Depart Chichen Itza.

7:30 PM—Meet in the lobby for farewell group dinner. Enjoy your last evening of festivities in Merida.

DAY 8
Either Friday night or Saturday morning, take care of any extra charges you may have accrued during the week, such as phone calls or laundry services.

12:00 PM—Meet in the hotel lobby in order to head to the airport.
