Celebrating Hispanic Heritage: The Goodlands Project

The Goodlands Photography Project at Centro Nueva Creación offers its students an opportunity to function as an essential key in transforming the neighborhood, which is too often referred to as the “Badlands.”

Centro Nueva Creación is reclaiming and renaming the surrounding locale, forcing the “Goodlands” into reality. By putting a camera in the hands of our youth, we encourage and guide the students to focus on the positive aspects of their lives. The image-making process becomes an outlet for exposing countless hidden truths, and our hope is that these images will offer a new perspective on the West Kensington and Fairhill neighborhoods of North Philadelphia.

North Philadelphia has been stigmatized by the media for years as the “Badlands;” a region ridden by drugs, crime, and poverty. The Goodlands Community Arts Program works against these negative perceptions by engaging the youth of the West Kensington and Fairhill neighborhoods in photography classes. It is these young people that provide endless images of hope and life through their photographic lens. At times, their photos capture the harsh realities of life in this neighborhood, but most striking is the strength of the people living here and the rich Latino culture that survives. Over the past 5 years, hundreds of youth in the Goodlands Community Arts Program have taken photographs that have been shared with thousands throughout Philadelphia in annual and traveling exhibitions.
