How to Use PSYCHOLOGICAL ABSTRACTS

Psychological Abstracts has four basic parts:

STEPS TO FINDING ARTICLES BY SUBJECTS

1. Look up your topic in the SUBJECT INDEX.

2. Write down the abstract number that follows the subject term.

3. In the ABSTRACT VOLUME LOCATE THE ABSTRACT NUMBER(s) you have written down. Next to the number will be the complete citation (author, title, journal, volume, issue, pages, and date) and the abstract of the article.

4. Check the LIBRARY's ONLINE CATALOG to find out whether the journal is in our collection.

5. To get the full text of an article, take the completed PERIODICAL REQUEST slip (with the complete citation) to Circulation and present your ID. You may borrow up to four (4) periodicals at one time.

6. IF YOU NEED TO FIND MORE ARTICLES, repeat the above steps with another year and volume of PSYCHOLOGICAL ABSTRACTS.

7. ASK a LIBRARIAN to help locate journals not in our library collection.

WORD OF CAUTION:
PSYCHOLOGICAL ABSTRACTS uses the same abstract numbers every year. Make sure that you look up your abstract number in the same year/volume as the index you used. Otherwise, you may find an abstract that has nothing to do with your subject. For example, if you used index volume 75, make sure you look for the abstracts in abstract volume 75.
