New Student Orientation Frequently Asked Questions

How do I interpret room numbers at the College?
Locations on the
Main Campus that you will see on class lists, rosters and other correspondence are listed with a building code and room number.

B = Bonnell Building
M = Mint Building
W = West Building
G = Gymnasium
S = Winnet Student Life Building
C = Center for Business and Industry
NERC = Northeast Regional Center
NWRC = Northwest Regional Center
WERC = West Regional Center

For example: BR-28 = Bonnell Building, Rotunda Level, Room 28
S1-19 = Winnet Building, 1st Floor, Room 19

Where do I get my picture I.D.?
First, check your roster to see if you have paid your $10.00 fee for your I.D. If you have not paid, your roster will say $10.00 is due. If the fee is due, you must go to the cashier and pay. Then take your paid bill or roster to the I.D. Center, S1-04. They will take your picture and give you your I.D. You may use your paper I.D. until then, but you must get the picture I.D as soon as possible.

Can I park in the garage?
Parking is on a first-come, first-serve basis. The fee is $2.00 for the first hour. The all-day rate (one hour or more) is $4.00 for current students. You must be able to show a college I.D. or roster. On-street metered parking is also available, but it may be difficult to get a spot during peak times. Limited free parking is available at each Regional Center.

How do I get a locker?
Lockers are usually reserved in September and held through April. During the first week of fall classes, you can reserve a locker at the crossway (overlooking the Library) between the Bonnell and Mint Buildings on the Rotunda floor. If you are a new student in the spring semester, see the assistant in Facilities Management, MG-17. There may be a few unreserved lockers available.

Does the College offer childcare?
The Daybridge Child Development Center is on campus (540 N. 16th Street) and serves children ages 2-5. The center is managed by Knowledge Learning Corporation and is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. You can stop by to pick up an enrollment form. For more information, call 215-751-8765.

What happens to me if I am absent?
According to the college policy, any student who has missed the equivalent of two weeks of class may be dropped from the course. Each professor has his/her own policy as well. This is clearly explained in the course syllabus. Know the professor's policy so there will not be any surprises. If you know you won't be in class, tell your professor in person or contact them by phone. Make sure you find out what you need to know in order to be prepared for the next class.

What can I do if I cannot come to school?
Contact your professor, especially if you know you will be absent for several days. Otherwise, you can be dropped by your professor for too many absences. Call the professor at his/her office phone listed on your syllabus. If the professor is not in the office, leave a message by phone or e-mail clearly stating the reason for your absence and your name and J-Number. You must be prepared to verify that you have contacted your professor and provide documentation of emergencies.

Can I drop a course?
Yes, with varying penalties:
  • You may lose financial aid or your money
  • You will get a "W" grade
  • A "W" grade is counted against you
Dropping a course may affect your academic standing at the College. If you are considering dropping a course, see a counselor or an advisor.

What happens to my grant if I drop a course?
If you drop a course before the tenth week of classes, your grant is recalculated. You may end up owing the College or the financial aid grant program money, which you will have to pay out of your pocket. Should you fail to repay money to a grant program, you may be denied future aid.

Dropping a course may also affect your aid status in the following semesters. Register for what you can handle successfully. Try not to drop any courses during the semester.

What do I do if I am having problems with financial aid?
Go directly to the Financial Aid office in BG-3 or call them at 215-751-8271 for assistance. You may also send an email to financialaid@ccp.edu.

Can I work and attend college full-time?
It will be very difficult. If you are a full-time student, you should not work more then 15 hours a week. If you attend school 12 hours a week, you should spend at least 24 hours a week studying. You also need time for transportation, fun, sleep and other personal responsibilities.

Should I get a tutor?
Yes and as early as possible. Do not wait until you are completely lost or until the week of exams. You will have a hard time catching up if you wait too long to get help.

Where do I get a tutor?
First, ask professors for help during their office hours. Second, go to one of the three Learning Labs on the Main Campus.

When do I register for the next semester?
During the fourth week of the semester, you will receive a letter with the name of your advisor, who will register you for the next semester's classes. Read the letter carefully, follow the directions to make an appointment and keep the appointment. Register early so you will have a better chance to choose the classes and the times that fits your schedule.
