Life in the United States
Many cultures create the social fabric of the United States and yet, all Americans have some common qualities. Americans are proud of their country’s history and independence, and they realize the value of their freedom. Many Americans work a traditional five-day work week of 40 hours, from 8:00 a.m. or 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Time for leisure and other activities is regarded as a necessity, and spending time with family is important.Sports are a big part of many American lives, from watching the event in person or on television. Baseball is nicknamed “America’s favorite pastime,” but Americans also enjoy three other popular sports: football, hockey, and basketball.
Other favorite American pastimes include shopping, watching television, traveling, and going to the movies.
Banking
You will most likely need to open a checking account in order to pay bills and buy goods. Visit any local bank to set up an account. You will need to deposit some money into the account when it is first opened. The bank associate will explain how the account works and answer questions that you may have.
Housing
Community College of Philadelphia is a commuter school, which means that housing for students is not available through the College. Students must make their own arrangements. Perhaps a friend or a relative could assist you in finding a suitable place to live. Otherwise, an excellent source of information for both temporary and long-term housing is the Office of Off-Campus Living at the University of Pennsylvania. More information is available at their Web site: http://www.business-services.upenn.edu/offcampusliving/
Additionally, the International House in the University City section of Philadelphia has both short-term and long-term options. More information is available at their Web site: http://www.ihousephilly.org
Community College of Philadelphia is not affiliated in any way with the organizations listed above, nor should any recommendation be implied.
Driving
If you wish to purchase an automobile and drive while attending Community College of Philadelphia, you will need to obtain insurance and registration for the vehicle at the time of sale. At the time of purchase, especially at a dealership, you will need to have your Driver’s License, which can be obtained at the various PennDot (Pennsylvania Department of Transportation) locations. If you already have a valid driver’s license from home, you may drive up to one year in Pennsylvania before obtaining a Pennsylvania driver’s license.
If you do not know how to drive a car, you will need to take a driving test and written test to earn a Learner’s Permit. Even if you already know how to drive, it is essential to learn and understand the local traffic laws. For more information about what documentation is needed to apply for a learners permit or driver’s license, visit www.dmv.state.pa.us/licensing_master/identity.shtml
Many times, international students are looked upon by insurance companies as “high risk,” since there is no established driving record within the state. Insurance policies for international students tend to be very expensive, especially for males under the age of 25.
Please note that if your vehicle is stopped by a police officer and you receive a ticket, the fine is mailed in to a corresponding address and not paid to the police officer. Giving money to the police may be considered bribery, which is illegal.
