What does the test cost?
The placement test is free.

How long is the test?
The length of the test varies depending on individual situations. Typically, the entire process takes three hours.

Who must take the placement test?
Before you enroll in classes, you must take a writing, reading, and mathematics test to determine which classes will best meet your needs.

Who is exempt from taking the placement test?
You are exempt from taking the test if:
  • You already have a college degree from an accredited college, and the College's transcript office (BG-6) has evaluated a record of your previous academic experience;
  • You have passed college-level English composition and mathematics courses with a C or better from an accredited college;
  • You are interested in taking courses for which testing is not required. Please refer to the college catalog for more information;
  • You are eligible for the Senior Citizen Program 215-751-8249;
  • Within the last two years you received a minimum SAT score of 510 in English and 470 in mathematics or a minimum ACT score of 17 in English and 14 in mathematics.
  • You received a minimum of 213 on the TOEFL Computer test AND a 5 on the TOEFL writing test; or you received a minimum of 560 on the TOEFL paper/pencil test AND a 5 on the TOEFL writing test; or you received a minimum of 77 on the TOEFL internet based test AND a 20 on the TOEFL internet based writing test.
How am I scheduled for the test?
After submitting a completed application, you will be notified by mail with a date and time for your test. If you have to reschedule your appointment, please call 215-751-8010. You may submit your application by mail or electronically. Your application may also be submitted at one of the three regional centers or at the Welcome Center on the Main Campus (M1-17).

When do I receive the results of the test?
Your placement test results will be ready in approximately 5 business days. In order to maintain the confidentiality of student records, placement scores cannot be given to you over the phone. When you come in for your scheduled registration date, you will be given your placement scores.

Are there special tests for English as a Second Language (ESL) students?
Before registering for classes in ESL, you must take the ESL placement test. Please refer to the ESL section of this website for more information.

Can students with disabilities arrange to have special accommodations during the placement test?
You may contact the Center on Disabilities at 215-751-8050 in order to make arrangements for special testing accommodations.

Can I retest?
Retesting is done only in very specific circumstances. You will need to have a written referral from a professor or academic advisor/counselor.
