English as a Second Language (ESL)
If English is not your native language or you recently moved to the United
States, you may benefit from enrolling in ESL classes. To better meet
your educational needs, the College has developed an ESL placement test
which will help you and your academic advisor/counselor determine which
classes are best for you.
The test takes approximately three and one half hours. The test is made
up of four parts: writing, listening, reading, and math. You must take
all four sections in order to ensure an accurate placement.
The Test Of English As A Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores are not required
for admission to Community College of Philadelphia. However, if you have
taken the TOEFL tests, the following scores make you exempt from having
to take the placement test:
- a minimum of 213 on the TOEFL computer test AND a 5 on the TOEFL writing test;
- or a minimum of 560 on the TOEFL paper/pencil test AND a 5 on the TOEFL writing test;
- or a minimum of 77 on the TOEFL internet based test AND a 20 on the internet based writing test.
