Community College of Philadelphia Celebrates Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service with On-campus Events

PHILADELPHIA, January 17, 2008 – Community College of Philadelphia will host its Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21. For the College, Jan. 21 is not a day off, but a day to share with the College family and the community Dr. King’s message of service to others.

This year’s theme is, “Do a service to yourself and the world we live in – GO GREEN.” The day will feature numerous “go green” activities for adults and children. Most events will take place in the Winnet Student Life Building, on the west side of 17th Street, between Spring Garden and Callowhill streets.

There will also be vision screenings and CPR training. All events are free, with the exception of the CPR training, for which there is a $25 fee. Last year’s program attracted nearly 200 people who learned how to enhance their volunteer skills.

For many years, Community College of Philadelphia has been one of the largest sites in the city of Philadelphia for MLK Day of Service activities.

All students, staff, faculty and their guests, including children, are encouraged to be a part of this meaningful and fun day. Refreshments, T-shirts, certificates and free parking in the 17th Street parking lot will be available.

The day will begin with reflections on Dr. King and include inspirational movie clips and a rendition of one of his speeches. Other activities will include:

Paul Miles, PECO Energy – discussing energy efficiency and handing out energy efficient light bulbs – Winnet Building, S2-19
Phoebe Coles – Keep Philadelphia Beautiful – Winnet Building, S2-19
Recycle Now Philadelphia – providing blue recycling bins – Winnet Building, S2-19
America Beautiful – providing brown recycling bags for leaves – Winnet Building, S2-19
Children’s crafts and music – Winnet Building, The Coffeehouse
The Philadelphia Eagles – book giveaways – Winnet Building, The Coffeehouse
Free Vision Screenings by the Pennsylvania College of Optometry – Winnet Building, S2-12
CPR Training – limited to first 20 people ($25 fee includes manual and card) – The Gym, on 17th Street, next to the Winnet Building

The day will conclude with personal reflections on the day’s activities and on how to make service a long lasting civic action. For additional information about the College’s MLK Day of Service, go to the College’s Web site: www.ccp.edu.

The day’s events are sponsored by Community College of Philadelphia’s Office of Student Life and the College’s Phi Theta Kappa Rho Upsilon Chapter, in partnership with The American Red Cross, the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, the Philadelphia Eagles, Keep Philadelphia Beautiful, America Beautiful, Recycle Now Philadelphia and PECO.
