CHEYNEY UNIVERSITY AND COMMUNITY COLLEGE OF PHILADELPHIA SIGN DUAL ADMISSIONS PROGRAM AGREEMENT
PHILADELPHIA, November 1, 2007 - Cheyney University of Pennsylvania and Community College of Philadelphia officially signed a dual admissions agreement on Wednesday, Oct. 31.
Stephen M. Curtis, president of Community College of Philadelphia, and Michelle R. Howard-Vital, president of Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, signed the agreement, which officially launched a dynamic new partnership that allows students to matriculate through both higher education institutions and be eligible for lucrative scholarships.
"Community College of Philadelphia is delighted to enter into this partnership with an institution that is so rich in history,” President Curtis said, during a signing ceremony at Community College of Philadelphia’s Center for Business and Industry. “Our partnership with Cheyney University provides our students with an excellent option to continue their education. The agreements we have with four-year institutions are important because they validate our mission and the excellence of our faculty."
"We are committed to being a resource to the needs of the region and we understand that learning is a life-long process. This partnership is the beginning in the futures of both institutions," President Howard-Vital said.
Through the partnership, graduates of Community College of Philadelphia
with Associate
in Science, Associate in Applied Science or the appropriate Associate in
Arts degrees can
seamlessly transfer to Cheyney University of Pennsylvania with junior status.
Qualified students are eligible for special benefits, including academic scholarships and the opportunity to complete Master’s and Doctoral programs tuition free. As an added incentive and in recognition of academic achievement, students who graduate from Community College of Philadelphia with a 3.0 grade point average are eligible for up to $6,000 in scholarship money and students with a 3.25 or better grade point average are eligible for a full scholarship up to $16,000.
While this was the official signing of the agreement, students are already
aware of this
valuable opportunity and 46 students to date have signed a dual admissions
agreement with Cheyney University of Pennsylvania. Marcia Teagle, a student
who transitioned through the program spoke at the signing ceremony. She
remarked how smooth the transition was for her and that the opportunities
to continue her education are endless. "I would never have been able
to accomplish my goals without this program," Teagle said.
Judith Gay, Ph.D, vice president for Academic Affairs at Community College
of Philadelphia, stated: “Both Community College of Philadelphia
and Cheyney University want to know how students perform once they transfer.
For students, faculty, staff and the public, this is an indication of the
quality of preparation. Our agreement includes an ongoing conversation
about how students as a group perform after they transfer. That kind of
dialog benefits everyone and makes student outcomes paramount in assessing
the benefit of an agreement. At a time when it is clear that our knowledge
economy requires well-educated citizens, Community College of Philadelphia
and Cheyney University are saying through this agreement that we understand
the need and are working to make sure that we are adding value to our society
through education.”
Community College of Philadelphia has dual admissions partnerships with a variety of other higher-education institutions including Cabrini College, Chesnut Hill College, Drexel University, Eastern University, La Salle University, Peirce College and Temple University.
