MAYOR STREET APPOINTS NEW TRUSTEES TO THE BOARD OF COMMUNITY COLLEGE OF PHILADELPHIA
PHILADELPHIA, May 1, 2006 - Mayor John Street has appointed six new members and reappointed three previous members to the Community College of
Philadelphia's Board of Trustees.
The appointees are from a variety of business and public service backgrounds. They bring with them a wealth of knowledge that will benefit the College in its
future endeavors.
The new trustees include: Johnny J. Butler, Esq., of Booth and Tucker, LLP; George E. Davis, retired senior vice president of Human Resources for Lincoln
Financial Group; Varsovia Fernandez, executive director of the Greater Philadelphia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce; Sallie A. Glickman, founding executive
director of the Philadelphia Workforce Investment Board; Jeremiah J. White Jr., chairman of the Osiris Group, Inc.; and Marcellette Wise Ellison, director
of Commercial Capabilities for GlaxoSmithKline.
The College also is pleased to welcome back the three trustees whom Mayor Street reappointed. They include Rhonda R. Cohen, Esq., a former partner in Ballard
Spahr Andrews Ingersoll; the Honorable James R. Roebuck Jr., State Representative of the 188th District; and Gilbert A. Wetzel, managing
director of Mayer & Associates.
The following is a brief summary of each trustee's credentials:
New Appointments
Johnny J. Butler, Esq. - An attorney with Booth & Tucker, LLP, Butler specializes in employment law. For eight years he was the secretary of the Pennsylvania
Department of Labor and Industry. He was an attorney for the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission from 1975 to 1979. He also has received the
Arthur S. Fleming, Presidential Rank of Meritorious Executive Award and the Lincoln University Distinguished Service Award.
George E. Davis - Davis worked for Lincoln Financial Group in Philadelphia for a dozen years until his retirement in April 2005. As senior vice president of
Human Resources he was responsible for employment, benefit and compensation planning and administration. Davis was also chairman of the Philadelphia Workforce
Investment Board from 2000 to 2005 and vice president of the board of Philadelphia Futures from 2001 to 2005.
Varsovia Fernandez - For nearly three years, Fernandez was vice president of Congreso de Latinos Unidos, a not-for-profit, social service organization that
primarily serves Latino neighborhoods in North Philadelphia. As vice president, she was responsible for fundraising, advocacy and external affairs management.
Fernandez recently became executive director of the Greater Philadelphia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, which advocates for services and policies that help the
Hispanic business community.
Sallie A. Glickman - As founding executive director of the Philadelphia Workforce Investment Board for the last six years, Glickman has been responsible for
providing the leadership to move this $2 million nonprofit corporation forward in its mission to build a competitive workforce in Philadelphia. She previously
served as vice president for Institutional Advancement for the Private Industry Council of Philadelphia and she is currently first vice president for the U.S.
Conference of Mayors' Workforce Development Council.
Jeremiah J. White, Jr. - At Orsiris Group, Inc. in Philadelphia, White has been chairman for six years of a communications, marketing and business strategy
firm with clients in the tourism, smart growth and life sciences industries. Previously, he was executive vice president of Universal Companies, a South
Philadelphia-based community development corporation. From 1991 to 2001, he was director of the Philadelphia Development Partnership, a private,
nonprofit group that promotes economic development in low and moderate income neighborhoods of Greater Philadelphia.
Marcellette Wise Ellison - At GlaxoSmithKline, Ellison serves as director of Commercial Capabilities for the corporation's pharmaceuticals market analysis and
commercial support division. As director, she develops marketing instructional programs to enlighten and broaden the strategic thinking of marketers.
Prior to GlaxoSmithKline, she spent four years at Chase Manhattan Bank, where she was vice president/manager of retail database marketing analysis.
Her civic interests include being the foundation chair of the Philadelphia chapter of Jack & Jill of America.
Reappointments
Rhonda R. Cohen, Esq. - A member of the Community College of Philadelphia's Board of Trustees since 1992 and board chair since 2000, Cohen is a former partner in
the Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll law firm. For 20 years, she specialized in corporate, securities and executive compensation issues. She is on the boards of
the Delaware Valley Friends School, The Christopher Ludwick Foundation, the White-Williams Scholars and the Anti-Defamation League's Metropolitan Philadelphia
Advisory Board. She also is a commissioner on the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.
State Representative James R. Roebuck, Jr. - Serving in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives since 1985, State Rep. Roebuck is currently Minority chair of the
House Education Committee. He also is vice chair of the Community College of Philadelphia's Board of Trustees and is chair of the board's Academic Affairs Committee.
By training he is an educator, having taught for 14 years in the History/Politics department of Drexel University. He currently sits on the board of directors of
the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency and a variety of civic organizations.
Gilbert A. Wetzel - A retired chairman and CEO of Verizon-Pennsylvania and Delaware and a former executive vice president for Right Management Consultants,
Wetzel currently is senior vice president for the Mayer Leadership Group, a human resources consulting firm. He is vice chair of the Community College of
Philadelphia's Board of Trustees. He also is a past chairman of The Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce and currently is a director of the American
Computer & Electronics Corp.
