Community College of Philadelphia and Wachovia Announce Innovative Scholarship Program to Benefit Low-Income Single Mothers

PHILADELPHIA, PA, October 2, 2003 - Community College of Philadelphia announced today the Wachovia Scholars Program. With a $50,000 donation from Wachovia, the College has established a scholarship endowment to provide financial support to low-income, single mothers who want to pursue an associateÕs degree, with preference given to students pursuing a degree in business programs such as marketing or accounting.

Wachovia initiated the scholarship with the goal of recognizing women who demonstrate the ability to achieve in academic and community endeavors, and who can continue to overcome obstacles to success with financial support.

The Wachovia Scholars Program will be awarded annually to provide two students with a $1,000 award to alleviate the costs of tuition and fees unmet by other sources of financial aid.

A committee formed by Community College of PhiladelphiaÕs Foundation will choose scholarship recipients based on eligibility for TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families), a commitment from the student to register for a minimum of six credits at the College, and a minimum grade point average of 2.5 earned in a previous semester at the College. Joyce Warren, Wachovia vice president for Higher Education and Private Schools Group, will represent the bank on the committee.

Selection of students for the award will be competitive. Eligible students must complete an application, compose an essay, and provide faculty recommendations and records from their previous semesters. Two recipients per academic year will receive $1,000 to defray the costs of their education at Community College of Philadelphia.

Community College of Philadelphia submitted a proposal to Wachovia to form the scholarship endowment, and was selected for its commitment to Philadelphia. Recognizing that good citizenship is good business, Wachovia continues to fill a need in PhiladelphiaÕs workforce with this innovative partnership.
