Names Butler to Board of Trustees
PHILADELPHIA, February 4, 2003 – Thomas J. Butler, Career
and College Guidance Coordinator for the School District of Philadelphia,
has been named a trustee of Community College of Philadelphia. Butler
was appointed by Mayor John F. Street to a term expiring in 2008.
His career has revolved around providing access to higher education to
all who may benefit. Previously, he was director of the College Access
Program for the Philadelphia Education Fund and director of Admissions
for Cheney University of Pennsylvania.
He is involved in an array of professional activity including chair of
the Mayor’s Office on Community Services YouthWeb Advisory Board,
Philadelphia University’s ACT 101 Advisory Board, Champions of Caring
Educational Advisory Committee, and chair of Community In Schools of Philadelphia’s
Providers Network.
Butler has earned numerous awards including the Pennsylvania Association
for College Admission Counseling’s 2002 Human Relations Award, the
Congressional Black Caucus/ School District Leadership Award, and the
National Council of Educational Opportunity Programs Leadership Development
Training Award. He also is a graduate of the Urban League of Philadelphia’s
Leadership Institute.
Butler earned a master of education degree from Kutztown University and
a bachelor of music degree from Cheyney University of Pennsylvania. He
is a resident of the Germantown section of Philadelphia.
