Mary Griffin, assistant professor of English, and Jamie Picardy, instructor of Social Science, attended a workshop in Fukuoka, Japan sponsored by the Japan Studies Association. They were two of five participants from Community College of Philadelphia, led by Fay Beauchamp, who traveled to Japan for the three-day conference in June. The workshop focused on historic economic interactions among Japan, China and Korea, and looked to the future implications of those relationships and how they relate to western nations. A highlight of the workshop was the afternoon excursions to historical sites and museums that illustrated the content of the lectures held in the mornings. The afternoon trips were frequently led by the lecturer, which provided an opportunity to pose questions and engage the speaker in a more informal manner. The workshop's setting in a foreign country caused participants to get to know each other better, and this familiarity opened the doors for more communication across disciplines. Further development of the Center for International Understanding and opportunities such as this conference will help advance this interdisciplinary discussion and increase an international perspective here at the College.

Jane Jacobs, assistant professor of Paralegal Studies, has been appointed to the Youth Aid Panel, 17th District, by Philadelphia District Attorney, Lynne Abraham. Members of the Youth Aid Panel are highly-trained volunteers who mentor juvenile criminal offenders in this special program. Juvenile Court judges may permit first-time juvenile offenders to participate in the program if the individual admits guilt to the crime he or she is accused of, and then enters into a contract with the Youth Aid Panel. Each panel member is assigned to mentor a youth offender through his or her fulfillment of the contract, which can include requirements such as counseling, drug testing, community service, written essays or reports and restitution. Once the terms of the contract have been completed, the offender's criminal record is expunged. The program seeks to impart the gravitas of crime upon its participants, and provide first-time offenders with an opportunity to avoid a criminal record. In 2006, more than 1,000 juveniles entered into contracts with the Youth Aid Panel and 80 percent who entered the program successfully fulfilled their contracts.

Dennis McGrath, professor of Sociology, has had a policy paper published by the KnowledgeWorks Foundation titled, "Convergence as Strategy and as Model: Linking P-16 Education Reform and Economic Development." The paper explores the topic of convergence, which is a form of civic organization whereby preschool through college education programs are aligned with local and regional job training and economic development goals. McGrath charted this convergence trend in four communities in Ohio, and he has identified specific strategies, approaches, practices and public policies that can help or hinder these initiatives. The policy paper is available for free on the KnowledgeWorks Foundation Web site.

Joo Won Park, assistant Professor of Music, was featured in the DVD portion of Computer Music Journal 31, no. 4 (MIT Press: Winter 2007). The recording, titled KutMalKut, refers to a Korean word game played by children where a player must recite a word that begins with the last syllable of the word used by his or her opponent. The composition features sounds that are representative of the player's words and evoke the spirit of the game. Park has also been selected as a finalist of the Bourges International Competition of Electroacoustic Music for his recent composition, Gainesville Soundscape.

Kathy Smith, associate professor of Paralegal Studies and head of the Social Sciences Department, moderated the Keystone Alliance of Paralegal Associations' 2008 Pennsylvania Summit on the Paralegal Profession on Saturday, September 13, 2008. The organization of regional paralegal associations works to monitor developments and to promote the paralegal profession. The annual statewide summit of paralegal associations in Pennsylvania was held at Penn College, and Smith's role as moderator provided excellent visibility for the College's Paralegal program.
