Scholarships and Awards for Students in Varied Fields of Study

AlliedBarton Security Services Scholarship*
The AlliedBarton Security Services Scholarship was established to recognize a new student who intends to pursue an associate’s degree in the College’s Justice program, demonstrates the ability to achieve in academic endeavors and has overcome barriers on the way to success.

The scholarship will provide funding for tuition and fees up to $7,200, with no more than $3,600 disbursed in one academic year for one student. If the recipient is a full-time student, the funds can be expended over two years; if the recipient is a part-time student, the funds can be expended over four years. Books and other materials are not covered by the scholarship. The actual amount of the award is based on the student’s enrollment status. Funding for the second year of the scholarship is contingent upon continued funding from the donor.

    Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicant must be a first-time college student, with no prior college credits.
  • High school applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 and must submit a copy of his/her high school transcript for review.
    NOTE: To remain eligible for the second year of funding, applicants must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.5 grade point average as of June 2010.
  • Applicant must be a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
  • Applicant must have applied for admission to Community College of Philadelphia prior to submitting an application for this scholarship.
  • Applicant can be enrolled on a full-time or part-time basis but must be enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours per semester.
  • Applicant must submit an essay with his/her application. The application contains more information on the essay.
  • The recipient of the AlliedBarton Security Services Scholarship must agree to a paid internship with AlliedBarton. Additionally, continued receipt of the scholarship is contingent upon the student’s performance and professionalism as an intern, as determined by the internship supervisor.
  • Applicant must indicate an interest in the College’s Justice program. Failure to enroll in the Justice curriculum will result in termination of the scholarship.
  • Applicant must submit one letter of recommendation with his/her application. The letter of recommendation must be written by a teacher, counselor, principal or supervisor and must be signed and written on the organization’s letterhead.
  • Applicant is encouraged to complete the 2010/2011 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is available at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

Allyn & Bacon Anthropology Prize
The Allyn & Bacon Anthropology Prize is given to a current Community College student with the best paper in Anthropology for this year. The theme is culture change, and the paper should answer the question: How has anthropology contributed to the study of culture change? Papers will be accepted in any field of anthropology, including biological anthropology, linguistics, archaeology and cultural anthropology. The student with the best paper is awarded a $100 gift certificate.

Submitted papers are limited to 1,000-1,500 words. Paper must be cleanly typed and properly referenced and cited, using APA style. Paper must be stapled, with the exception of the title page, which should be attached by paper clip. Title page should include paper title, student name, address, phone number and email, course, instructor name and date of submission. Four copies of the paper must be submitted. No name or other identifying information should appear in the body of the paper, but the title should be included on the first page. Papers that do not follow these rules will be disqualified.

Selection of the winner is competitive. The deadline for submitting a paper is in April. Papers should be submitted to BR-21. The winner is notified in April and is recognized at the College’s Academic Awards Ceremony in May. For more information, contact your Anthropology instructor.

Alumni Association Achievement Award
The Alumni Association Achievement Award was established to recognize the contributions of students who demonstrate the ability to achieve in academic and community endeavors. It is the hope of the Community College of Philadelphia Alumni Association that the scholarship recipients will continue to contribute to the work and mission of the College. Award amounts range from $300 to $600 and are to be used to meet educational expenses.

    Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicant can be enrolled full time or part time at the College at the time of application.
  • Applicant must be returning for the upcoming fall semester.
  • Applicant must have completed a minimum of 30 credits.
  • Applicant must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0.
  • Applicant must demonstrate achievement in both academic and community endeavors.

Selection of the award recipient is competitive. Applications are distributed in February. The deadline to submit an application is in March. Alumni Association Regional Center Book Award
The Alumni Association Regional Center Book Award was established to recognize one student from each Community College of Philadelphia Regional Center attending classes during summer I or II. Recipients receive a Barnes & Noble gift card, with a maximum value of $100, for use at any Community College of Philadelphia bookstore.

    Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicant must be enrolled at a College Regional Center at the time of application.
  • Applicant must be returning for the upcoming fall semester.
  • Applicant must have completed a minimum of 30 credits at a Regional Center.
  • Applicant must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5.
  • Applicant must demonstrate academic achievement and submit an essay.

Selection of award recipients is competitive. Applications are distributed in March. The deadline to submit an application is April. Awards are announced in May and presented at the Alumni Annual Gathering, held during the first Saturday in June. Dr. Edward Anderson Scholarship*
Dr. Edward Anderson was the founding director of the College’s Division of Economics and Business Administration, serving as professor from 1965 until his death in June of 1972. Dr. Anderson was highly regarded for his many talents and contributions to the College as an educator, administrator, entrepreneur, marketing expert and artist. It was Dr. Anderson’s devotion to his students in the role of educator that inspired alumni contributors to name this scholarship in his honor.

    Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicant must fall into one of the following categories:
  • Graduating high school senior who will attend the College in the upcoming semester or
  • Current student who has completed 15 or fewer credits at the College at the time the application is due.
  • Applicant must enroll or be enrolled at the College full time (minimum of 12 credit hours) in one of the College’s Business programs (certificate or degree).
  • Applicant must maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.5 to remain eligible for continued scholarship assistance.
  • Finalists will be required to participate in an interview with the scholarship award committee before the final selection is made.
  • Applicant must submit a copy of his/her high school academic transcript or College transcript.
  • Applicant must submit one letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor or principal.

Funding will provide one scholarship up to $3,000 or two scholarships up to $1,500 each, disbursed equally over two academic semesters, with the explicit understanding that the student(s) will have successfully completed a minimum of 12 credits each semester. Students who are not eligible for state or federal grant assistance will be given preference. Applications are distributed in March. The deadline for submitting an application is early May. Sandra Lynn Barnett Scholarship Award
The Sandra Lynn Barnett Scholarship Award was established in 2004 with a gift from the estate of Sandra Lynn Barnett, a longtime employee in the College’s Counseling department. This scholarship award recognizes students pursuing an associate’s degree at the College.

    Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicant must be enrolled at the College prior to applying for this scholarship and must be attending classes at the time the application is submitted.
  • Applicant must have started at the College in one of the following Educational Support Services programs: Act Now/Act 101, CLC, CAP or ESL.
  • Applicant can be enrolled on a full-time or part-time basis but must have completed a minimum of six credit hours each semester. The six-credit minimum does not apply to courses taken during the summer sessions.
  • Applicant must have completed and earned a minimum of 24 credits at the College toward an associate’s degree.
  • Applicant must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5.
  • Applicant must submit a one-page essay with the application.
  • Applicant must submit one letter of recommendation from a College faculty or staff member.

A maximum of six students will receive cash awards. Applications are distributed in February. The deadline for submitting an application is early April. John C. Bogle Pathways Scholarship
The John C. Bogle Pathways Scholarship will provide financial assistance to a full-time student pursuing an associate’s degree in one of the College’s Business programs. Funding will provide one tuition scholarship of up to $500 disbursed equally over fall 2010 and spring 2011.

    Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicant must be a current Community College of Philadelphia student who has completed 30 or more credits at the College as of May 31, 2010.
  • Applicant must enroll/or be enrolled as a full-time student, taking a minimum of 12 credits per semester, in one of the College’s Business programs (certificate or degree). Business programs include Accounting, Finance, Management and Marketing.
  • Applicant must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 and must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 to remain eligible for the second semester of scholarship funding.
  • Applicant must possess the qualities of leadership, initiative and character.
  • Applicant must have demonstrated success in the face of adversity while achieving career and personal goals.
  • Applicant must submit a copy of his/her most recent unofficial College transcript.
  • Applicant must submit one letter of recommendation from a Community College of Philadelphia faculty member of counselor.

Book Award for Justice Majors
The Book Award for Justice Majors, with a maximum award of $250, will be given to a student for the purchase of textbooks in the College’s Bookstore during the fall 2010 semester.

    Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicant must be enrolled in the Justice curriculum.
  • Applicant must have earned a minimum of 30 credits at Community College of Philadelphia; nine of these credits must have been earned for Justice courses.
  • Student must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.

Dr. Lorraine H. Brown Scholarship in Memory of the Floyd Family
The Dr. Lorraine H. Brown Scholarship in Memory of the Floyd Family provides up to 10 tuition scholarships, with a maximum award amount of $2,000 each, to students pursuing associate’s degrees at Community College of Philadelphia. Preference is given to African-American students. Scholarship funds will be disbursed equally over the fall 2010 and spring 2011 semesters and applied directly to recipients’ tuition accounts upon verification of enrollment.

    Eligibility Criteria
  • • Applicant must be continuing his/her studies at Community College of Philadelphia during the fall 2010 and spring 2011 semesters.
  • • Applicant must have earned a minimum of 24 credits at the College. Only credits that count toward the grade point average are considered. Please refer to the over all “Earned Hours” on your unofficial transcript.
  • • Applicant must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5. A copy of the most recent unofficial College transcript must be submitted with the application. Recipients must maintain a 2.5 minimum cumulative grade point average for each semester of the award.
  • • Applicant may attend Community College of Philadelphia on a part-time or full-time basis but must be enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours per semester.
  • • Applicant must be a Philadelphia resident or have permanent residency status.
  • • African-American students preferred.
  • • Applicant must submit a two-page essay with the application. Please see the application for more information on the essay.
  • • Applicant must submit one letter of recommendation with the application. The letter of recommendation must be written by a Community College of Philadelphia faculty member or counselor. The letter of recommendation must be signed and written on the College’s letterhead.

Child Care Access Means Parents in Schools (CCAMPIS) Program
The Child Care Access Means Parents in Schools (CCAMPIS) Program is a federal grant funded by the U.S. Department of Education. This program supports the participation of low-income parents in postsecondary education through the provision of child care stipends. A maximum of $500 per month is awarded to student-parents. The stipend is sent directly to an accredited day care provider.

    Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicant must be a Pell-eligible student-parent attending Community College of Philadelphia.
  • A student receiving child care subsidy from the commonwealth of Pennsylvania is not eligible for participation.
  • Applicant must be in good academic standing, as outlined in the College Catalog, to apply.
  • Applicant must maintain a good academic standing to continue participation in the program.
  • Applicant must be attending classes or performing related activities during the time child care services are rendered.
  • Applicant must be registered for at least nine credits per semester. Nursing students must be enrolled for at least seven credits per semester.
  • Participants are required to attend two parenting workshops per year.

College Scholarship for Academic Excellence
This scholarship—with a maximum annual award of up to $1,500—is given to a graduating student who will continue his/her education at a baccalaureate institution. It is given in recognition of scholarly and general achievement at the College. Financial need is taken into consideration. Regular contributions of the faculty and staff of the College fund this award. Future availability is contingent upon continued funding.

    Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicant must have a minimum grade point average of 3.8.
  • Applicant must plan to enroll for full-time study at an accredited college or university.
  • Applicant must have completed or will complete the requirements for an associate’s degree at the College by the end of summer I 2010.

Applications are distributed in January to eligible students. The deadline for submitting an application is in February. Awards are announced in late April and awarded at the College’s Academic Awards Ceremony in May. Awards are paid directly to the four-year institution. Community College of Philadelphia Foundation Scholars Program
The Community College of Philadelphia Foundation Scholars Program recognizes students who demonstrate the ability to achieve in academic and community endeavors and who have overcome barriers on the way to success.

    Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicant must be registered and have completed successfully one semester of at least six credit hours at the College prior to applying for this scholarship.
  • Applicant can be enrolled on a full-time or part-time basis but must be enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours per semester.
  • Applicant must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5.
  • Applicant must submit an essay with the completed application.
  • Applicant must submit a letter of recommendation from a College faculty member.
  • Applicant must submit a copy of his/her unofficial College transcript with the application. A significant number of withdrawals or incompletes can negatively affect consideration.

These merit-based scholarships range from $1,000 to $2,000 and are to be used to meet educational expenses for attendance at the College. The maximum award per year for part-time students is $1,000, and the maximum award per year for full-time students is $2,000. Selection of scholarship recipients is competitive. Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Program Scholarship
The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation awards approximately 30 scholarships annually to outstanding students attending community colleges or two-year institutions in the United States who are and planning to transfer to four-year institutions.

    At a minimum, to be eligible, candidates must:
  • Be a current student at an accredited U.S. community college or two-year institution with sophomore status by December 31, 2009, or a recent graduate.
  • Plan to enroll full time in a baccalaureate program at an accredited college or university in fall 2010.
  • Have a cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 3.50 or better on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent).
  • Be nominated by his or her two-year institution.
  • Not have been nominated previously for this scholarship.

CORE Philly Scholarships*
CORE (College Opportunity Resources for Education) Philly offers scholarships of up to $3,000 to high school seniors to help pay first-year college expenses, including living expenses and books. The exact amount of your CORE Philly Scholarship will be determined by your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) as calculated through the completion of your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.

    To be eligible to apply in 2010, you must be:
  • A 2010 graduate of a School District of Philadelphia public, charter, archdiocese or private high school.
  • A resident of the city of Philadelphia. An applicant attending a parochial or private school must show proof of residency in Philadelphia along with one parent or legal guardian.
  • Planning to pursue an associate’s or bachelor’s degree at a participating college or university.
  • There is no GPA requirement, no required classes and no mandatory extracurricular activities.

Each year, CORE Philly accepts scholarship applications from April 1 through June 1 for students planning to attend college starting in the fall. Check the CORE Philly Web site, www.corephilly.org, for updates and exact dates for application submissions.

Diane and George Davis Scholarship
The Diane and George Davis Scholarship will provide scholarships to deserving students enrolled at Community College of Philadelphia in pursuit of an associate’s degree. Funding will provide scholarships of up to $1,000 each, disbursed equally over two semesters (fall 2010 and spring 2011). At least one of the three scholarships will be awarded with preference toward an African-American male student. Scholarship recipients who maintain their eligibility at the end of the first year of the scholarship award may be eligible to receive a second year of funding.

    Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicant must be a current Community College of Philadelphia student who has completed 24 or less credits at the College, as of April 30, 2010. Only credits that count toward your grade point average are considered. Please refer to the overall “GPA Hours Earned” on your unofficial transcript.
  • Applicant must be a Philadelphia resident and have Pennsylvania residency status.
  • Applicant can be enrolled on a part-time or full-time basis in an associate’s degree program at Community College of Philadelphia.
  • Applicants must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0
  • .
  • Applicant must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0 to receive funding for a second semester and to be considered for a second year of scholarship assistance. The second year of scholarship assistance is contingent upon the source of funds. Students who will receive a second year of funding will be notified by June 2011.
  • Applicant must submit a copy of his/her most recent unofficial College transcript.
  • Applicant must submit one letter of recommendation from a teacher or counselor.
  • If selected as the recipient, applicant must volunteer for a minimum of eight hours at the College per academic year. Volunteer activities will be coordinated through the College’s Office of Institutional Advancement.

Dwight D. Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship Program
The Dwight D. Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship Program provides up to three (3) fellowships, with a maximum award of $3,500 each, to Community College of Philadelphia students who are interested in pursuing careers in the transportation industry. For a listing of eligible majors, please visit http://faculty.ccp.edu/dept/autotech. Funding will be applied to tuition, fees and other educational expenses for the 2010/2011 academic year. Actual award amount is contingent upon funding.

    Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicant must possess a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
  • Applicant must have completed a minimum of 12 credits at the College and continue his/her studies at the College during the 2010/2011 academic year.
  • Applicant must be enrolled on a full-time basis to maintain the fellowship.
  • Applicant must provide four letters of recommendation. The letters must be written by a College faculty member, counselor or employer. The letters must be written on the organization’s letterhead, with original signatures.
  • Applicant must provide a copy of his/her recent unofficial transcript.
  • Applicant must write a summary of how his/her plan of study will impact and enhance the field of transportation and discuss the role of transportation in his/her career goals. Please see the application for further details.

Max Eirich/ESS Outstanding Achievement Awards
The Max Eirich/Educational Support Services Outstanding Achievement Awards honor students who entered the College in one of its developmental programs and who have excelled in their academic endeavors throughout their educational career at the College. Students are chosen based on academic standing, grade point average and ability to complete coursework. There is no application process for this award. The awards are named for Max Eirich, a faculty member in both the English and Counseling departments, who believed firmly in the potential of all students. Awards are given to students in the College Achievement Partnership (CAP), Act Now and Collaborative Learning Community (CLC) programs. Kathryn J. Engebretson Scholarship
The Kathryn J. Engebretson Scholarship was established by the William Penn Foundation and a private donor to provide financial support to a student attending Community College of Philadelphia in pursuit of an associate’s degree. Availability is contingent upon funding. Specifically, this award is geared toward female students returning to college and pursuing a postsecondary degree to enhance their life and achieve their career goals. The scholarship will provide funding for tuition, fees and books up to $10,000, with no more than $5,000 disbursed in one academic year. Only one scholarship will be awarded each year. Actual receipt of the scholarship is contingent upon the student’s enrollment status and grade point average. This scholarship will be awarded with the explicit understanding that the recipient will have successfully completed the requirements for an associate’s degree within the allotted time.

    Eligibility Criteria
    Students who meet all of the criteria listed below will be considered:
  • Female applicant preferred.
  • Applicant must fall into one of the following categories:
  • An individual returning to school after having been out of high school or college for a minimum of two years; or
  • Current student who returned to school after an absence of two years or more, has completed 15 or less credits at the College at the time the application is submitted and has a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
  • Applicant must enroll or be enrolled in one of the College’s associate’s degree programs.
  • Applicant can enroll on a part-time or full-time basis but must enroll in a minimum of six credit hours per semester if part time and a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester if full time.
  • Applicant must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher each semester to remain eligible to receive the scholarship.
  • Applicant must submit an essay with the application.
  • Applicant must submit one letter of recommendation with application.
  • Finalists must participate in an interview with the selection committee.

Robert Simonson ESL Graduation Award
The Robert Simonson ESL Graduation Award is presented to graduating students of English as a Second Language (ESL) who enter the College at a low level in the ESL English courses and have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement through hard work, perseverance and determination. The award honors the late Robert Simonson, a beloved ESL faculty member who passed away in 2009. ESL faculty select the recipient. Graduating students may apply. Federation Scholarship Fund
The Federation Scholarship is awarded to students who have accumulated 30 or more college-level credits with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher by the end of the fall term. The amount of the scholarship varies. Students must be continuing their education at a college or university to be considered eligibile. Applications can be submitted from January 15 through March 15. Recipients are acknowledged at the College’s Academic Awards Ceremony in May. First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia Scholarship*
The First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia Scholarship provides one tuition scholarship, with a maximum award of $3,500, to a full-time student pursuing his/her associate’s degree at Community College of Philadelphia.

    Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicant must fall into one of the following categories:
  • High school graduate who plans to attend Community College of Philadelphia in fall 2010 and spring 2011 or
  • Current Community College of Philadelphia student who has completed 24 or less credits and will continue his/her studies at the College in fall 2010 and spring 2011.
  • Applicant must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
  • Applicant must be enrolled full time, taking a minimum of 12 credits per semester, including previous semesters at the College.
  • Preference will be given to students who reside in the Point Breeze section of Philadelphia (ZIP codes 19145, 19146 and 19148).
  • Applicant must complete the 2010–2011 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is available at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
  • Applicant must submit a two-page essay with the application. The application contains more information on the essay.
  • Applicant must submit a minimum of two letters of recommendation with the application. One letter must be written by a teacher, counselor, principal or supervisor from your place of employment. Theresa Vuong Flynn Memorial Scholarship
The Theresa Vuong Flynn Scholarship honors the late Theresa Vuong Flynn, an instructor in the Early Childhood Education program at Community College of Philadelphia. A scholarship award of up to $500 will be given to a current student who will complete his/her studies at the College in an associate’s degree program.

    Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicant must be currently enrolled in an associate’s degree program at the College.
  • Applicant must have earned a minimum of 24 credits at the time of application.
  • Applicant may be enrolled full time or part time but must be taking a minimum of six credits per semester.
  • Applicant must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
  • Member of a minority group preferred, with preference given to Vietnamese students.
  • Applicant must be involved in community endeavors in a volunteer capacity.

Goldsmith-Irby Scholarship
The Goldsmith-Irby Scholarship, supported by the Community College of Philadelphia Alumni Association, will award one tuition scholarship, with a maximum award of $250, to a student who is pursuing his/her associate’s degree at Community College of Philadelphia. Scholarship funds will be applied directly to the recipient’s spring 2010 tuition account upon confirmation of enrollment.

    Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicant must be a current Community College of Philadelphia student who has earned a minimum of 15 credits and will continue his/her studies at the College during the spring 2010 semester.
  • Applicant must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0. A copy of the most recent unofficial College transcript must be submitted with the application.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who are married and have financial need.
  • Applicant may attend the College on a part-time or full-time basis but must be enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours for the spring 2010 semester.
  • Applicant must submit a one-page essay with the application. The application contains more information on the essay.
  • Applicant must submit one letter of recommendation with the application. The letter of recommendation must be written by a faculty member or counselor at the College. The letter must be written on College letterhead and include an original signature.

Greater Philadelphia Book Bank Award
The Greater Philadelphia Book Bank Award will provide financial assistance to two (2) Community College of Philadelphia students pursuing their associate’s degrees in Culture, Science and Technology; Science; or Engineering Science. Each award will provide up to $500 for the purchase of textbooks in the College’s Bookstore during the 2010/2011 academic year.

    Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicant must possess a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
  • Applicant must be returning for the fall 2010 semester.
  • Applicant must submit copy of his/her most recent unofficial transcript.
  • Applicant must be pursuing an associate’s degree in Science, Engineering Science, or Culture, Science and Technology.

    Hassel Foundation Scholarship
    With support from The Hassel Foundation, this scholarship provides financial assistance to students entering nontraditional career programs at the College. Annual awards, which average $1,000 each, are given to outstanding students to assist them in pursuing an associate’s degree.

      Eligibility Criteria
    • Applicant must be enrolled in a degree or certificate program as a part-time or full-time student, taking a minimum of 6 credit hours per semester as a part-time student and taking a minimum of 12 credits as a full-time student.
    • Applicant must possess an understanding of the nontraditional career chosen. Student will be required to submit a written statement of 100 words or more describing reasons for considering and seeking entry into a nontraditional career, specific short-term and long-term career goals and financial need.
    • Applicant must meet the requirements of the program placement test.
    • Applicant must maintain a 2.3 grade point average or require only one semester or precollege courses.
    • Female applicant preferred and must be a single parent/head of household.
    • Applicant must sign an “Intent to Succeed Contract,”which outlines the student’s commitment to achieve academic goals and authorizes release of information.
    • Applicant must submit a letter of recommendation from a Community College of Philadelphia faculty member, counselor or advisor.
    • Applicant must have completed at least one semester at the College.

    Students must have applied for federal financial aid (FAFSA). Future availability is contingent upon continued funding. Applications are distributed in August.     Hispanic Leaders of the Future Award*
    The Hispanic Leaders of the Future Award provides scholarship funds to assist outstanding students in meeting their educational expenses. The maximum award per year is $500 for part-time students and $1,000 for full-time students. Scholarship funds will be applied directly to the student’s tuition account upon confirmation of enrollment at Community College of Philadelphia for the fall 2010 semester.

      Eligibility Criteria
    • Applicant must fall into one of the following categories:
    • High school senior, graduating from high school in June 2010, and planning to attend Community College of Philadelphia in fall 2010 or
    • Current Community College of Philadelphia student who will continue his/her studies at the College in fall 2010.
    • Applicant must have a minimum of a “B” average or 3.0 grade point average.
    • Applicant must have applied for admission to Community College of Philadelphia prior to submitting an application for this scholarship.
    • Applicant must be a U.S. citizen, and Hispanic descent is preferred.
    • Applicant can be attending Community College of Philadelphia on a full-time or part-time basis but must be enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours per semester during the fall and spring.
    • Applicant must complete the 2010–2011 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
    • Applicant must submit a one-page personal statement with a maximum of 500 words, with his/her application.
    • Applicant must submit one letter of recommendation with his/her application.

Recipients are expected to attend a luncheon with the Scholarship Fund Sponsor.     Harry E. Hunter Truth Scholarship Award*
    This scholarship award was established in memory of Mr. Harry E. Hunter, a Bok Vocational Technical High School graduate and Philadelphia resident. Mr. Hunter could always be counted on for his honesty and truthfulness sprinkled with a little humor. The Harry E. Hunter Truth Scholarship provides one $1,000 award to a graduating senior from Bok Vocational Technical High School who will attend the College. The recipient is selected based on his/her academic transcript, letter of recommendation, responses to survey questions and a short essay.

    40 Leaders Honors Scholarship
    The 40 Leaders Honors Scholarship is awarded annually to a student enrolled in the Liberal Arts curriculum—Honors option to recognize the student’s high academic achievement and participation in the Honors curriculum at Community College of Philadelphia. A cash award of $750 will be presented to the recipient at the College’s Academic Awards Ceremony, which is held in May. Selection of the recipient is competitive. Faculty in the Honors curriculum will select one student from among those eligible based on faculty consideration of the student’s academic achievement and participation in the Honors seminars.     Phi Theta Kappa - All-USA
    The All-USA Scholarship awards a maximum of $2,500 to full-time, part-time and international students seeking associate’s degrees in a credited program.

      Eligibility Criteria
    • • Applicant must be enrolled at the College through December 2010.
    • • Applicant must be on track to earn an associate’s degree.
    • • Applicant must have a minimum of 45 semester college credits by December 31, 2009, with the intent to have a minimum of 53 semester college credits by August 31, 2010.
    • • Applicant must have a minimum of 30 semester college credit hours completed in the last five years.
    • • Applicant must not have previously been nominated for the All-USA Community College Academic Team.
    • • Applicant must hold a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 out of a possible 4.0 in all college credit coursework completed in the last five years.
    • • Applicant must have a record free of suspension, probation or other serious disciplinary action and must enjoy full citizenship rights of his or her country.

    Eastman Kodak Award
    The Eastman Kodak Award will provide a tuition award of $400 annually to one student enrolled in ART 151. The recipient will be selected by faculty in the Art department. The award will be made during the spring semester. For more information, contact the Art department at 215-751-8772.

    Robert S. King Scholarship*
    The Robert S. King Scholarship awards a two-year scholarship to 20 outstanding graduates from public or nonpublic, registered or licensed, diploma-granting high schools in the city of Philadelphia. A maximum of 20 students will be selected as the 2010 recipients of the scholarship. The Robert S. King Scholarship covers Philadelphia tuition and fees at the College for students who plan to enroll as full-time students in programs leading to an associate’s degree.

      Eligibility Criteria Each student selected to receive this scholarship must be graduating from a Philadelphia high school in June 2010 and must meet the following criteria:
    • Student must fall into one of the following categories by the end of the fall term prior to graduation:
    • Rank in the top 10 percent of his/her high school graduating class; or
    • Have a combined SAT score of 1070 or above in reading and math; or
    • Rank in the top 25 percent of the graduating class plus hold a 3.5 grade point average.
    • Student must be recommended by the high school principal.
    • Student must be recommended by one high school counselor.
    • Student must demonstrate evidence of initiative, accomplishment or leadership in at least one high school or community activity.
    • Student must complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid — www.fafsa.ed.gov) by June 1, 2010.
    • Student must submit an official high school transcript with scholarship application.
    • Student must submit a Community College of Philadelphia admission application, if not previously completed, with scholarship application.
    • Student must submit a personal statement describing how he/she will use his/her college education to serve others. Please see the application for more information.
    • Nomination forms are mailed out to each high school guidance office in December. Completed nomination packets are due to the College in mid-March. Students will be notified of the selection committee’s decision in April. Recipients must attend an orientation in June and participate in a private ceremony at Community College of Philadelphia in the fall.       Paralegal Studies Book Award
      The Paralegal Studies Book Award is presented to student(s) pursuing an associate’s degree in Paralegal Studies. There is no application process for this award. Faculty in the Paralegal Studies department select the recipient(s). The award is presented at the College’s Academic Awards Ceremony in May.       Philadelphia Inquirer/Daily News Scholarship
      This scholarship fund was established to assist the College’s students in meeting their educational expenses. Although recipients do not need to be enrolled in a particular curriculum, preference will be given to students who have selected a career in community service. Students must have applied for federal financial aid (FAFSA) and demonstrate financial need.

        Eligibility Criteria
      • Applicant must be enrolled full time, taking a minimum of 12 credits per semester, in a degree or certificate program at the College.
      • Applicant must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5.
      • Applicant must have placed into English 101 or needed only one semester of precollege courses as indicated by his/her college placement test results.
      • Applicant must possess an understanding of the career chosen.
      • Applicant must reside in areas within the distribution of The Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News in the greater Delaware Valley.

      Once students are accepted into the scholarship program, they will be required to maintain a 2.5 grade point average and sign an “Intent to Succeed Contract,” which outlines the students’ commitment to achieve academic goals.

      Piscopo Family Scholarship
      The Piscopo Family Scholarship will recognize a student, minority student preferred, pursuing an associate’s degree in a Business curriculum. A cash award, with a maximum value of $1,000, will be given annually to assist a student in pursuing his/her goal to continue his/her pursuit of the associate’s degree at Community College of Philadelphia.

        Eligibility Criteria
      • Applicant must be enrolled in a Business curriculum (Accounting, Finance, Management, etc.) at Community College of Philadelphia prior to applying for this scholarship.
      • Applicant must be eligible to apply for federal financial aid.
      • Applicant must be a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
      • Applicant can be enrolled on a full-time or part-time basis but must have completed a minimum of six credit hours in every semester. The six creditminimum does not apply to courses taken during the summer sessions.
      • Applicant must have completed and earned a minimum of 24 credits at the College toward an associate’s degree.
      • Applicant must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5.
      • Applicant must submit a one-page essay with the application. The essay is a critical component of the selection process.
      • Applicant must submit one letter of recommendation. The letter must be written by a Community College of Philadelphia faculty member.

      Randolph Family Scholarship
      The Randolph Family Scholarship provides financial assistance to a Community College of Philadelphia student pursuing an associate’s degree in Music. The scholarship, with a maximum award of $600, will provide funding for the purchase of textbooks in the College’s Bookstore for the 2010/2011 academic year. Recipient must be returning to Community College of Philadelphia in fall 2010.

        Eligibility Criteria
      • Applicant must be enrolled at Community College of Philadelphia prior to applying for this scholarship and pursuing an associate’s degree in Music.
      • Applicant can be enrolled on a full-time or part-time basis but must have com pleted a minimum of six credit hours every semester.
      • Applicant must have completed and earned a minimum of 24 credits at the College toward an associate’s degree at the time of application.
      • Applicant must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5.

      Evelyn Bodek Rosen Emergency CAP Book Fund
      The Evelyn Bodek Rosen Emergency CAP Book Fund was established to assist CAP students in financial need with emergency book funds. The maximum award per student is $80.00.       Kal and Lucille Rudman Foundation Tuition Grants
      The Kal and Lucille Rudman Foundation Tuition Grants program was established as a joint venture between Community College of Philadelphia, the Kal & Lucille Rudman Foundation and the Philadelphia Police Department. Tuition grants for tuition and fees for a three-credit course in the Justice curriculum are provided to police officers to attend courses at the Philadelphia Police Academy, Main Campus or Regional Centers.       James R. Smith Memorial Book Award
      The James R. Smith Memorial Book Award was established to provide financial assistance to a Community College of Philadelphia student pursuing an associate’s degree.       Tracey E. Smith Scholarship*
      The Tracey E. Smith Memorial Scholarship was established by the William Penn Foundation in memory of Tracey E. Smith, a former Foundation employee and graduate of Martin Luther King, Jr. High School. This scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior of Martin Luther King, Jr. High School who plans to attend Community College of Philadelphia.       Merrilyn Thompson Scholarship Award
      The Merrilyn Thompson Scholarship Award was established in memory of Merrilyn Thompson, an outstanding former faculty member of the Computer Sciences department. The award is sponsored by the Community College of Philadelphia Student Affiliate/Club of the American Association of University Women (AAUW)/Philadelphia Chapter. The award provides a $500 scholarship to a student who is pursuing his/her educational goals. The scholarship is to be used to meet the educational expenses for attendance at the College.

        Eligibility Criteria
      • Applicant must be entering or re-entering college after having been out of high school or college for 10 years or more prior to the date of application.
      • Applicant must be enrolled in precollege courses (e.g. MATH 017, ENGL 098).
      • Applicant can be enrolled at the College on a full-time or part-time basis but must be enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours per semester. The six-credit minimum does not apply to summer session enrollment.
      • Applicant should have completed a minimum of six credits and/or two consecutive semesters.
      • Applicant must submit a copy of his/her College roster as proof of current enrollment.
      • Applicant must submit an essay with the completed application.
      • Applicant must submit a letter of recommendation from a College faculty member or administrator.

      The award is contingent upon the availability of funds. Selection of the scholarship recipient is competitive. The awardee will be invited to attend a reception hosted by the AAUW Student Affiliate/Club. The scholarship will be applied to the recipient’s Statement of Account for the upcoming fall semester.       VIST Financial Future Business Scholarship
      The VIST Financial Future Business Scholarship is awarded to outstanding students pursuing an associate’s degree in a Business curriculum.

        Eligibility Criteria
      • Student must have earned a minimum of 30 credits at the College.
      • Student must have earned 12 or more credits in a combination of the following courses: Accounting 101, Accounting 102, Economics 181, Economics 182, Finance 151, Management 121, Management 141 and CIS 103.
      • Student must be enrolled for the fall 2009 semester and returning for the spring 2010 semester.
      • Student can be enrolled on a part-time or full-time basis but must be enrolled in a minimum of six credits per semester.
      • Student must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5.

      There is no application process for this scholarship. Recipients are selected by faculty based on the established criteria. Awards are announced in November.       Wachovia Scholars Program
      The Wachovia Scholars Program was established to recognize students who demonstrate the ability to achieve in academic and community endeavors and who have overcome barriers on the way to success. Specifically, this scholarship program will provide financial support to low-income single mothers or fathers pursuing an associate’s degree, with preference given to a student pursuing a degree in a business-related field (Marketing, Accounting, etc.). Individuals must be TANF eligible and/or Pell eligible to qualify.

        Eligibility Criteria Applicant must be registered at the College prior to applying for this scholarship.
      • Applicant must be enrolled in an associate’s degree program.
      • Applicant can be enrolled on a full-time or part-time basis but must be enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours in each semester enrolled at the College. The six credit minimum does not apply to the summer sessions.
      • Applicant should have completed at least one semester at the College.
      • Applicant must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5.
      • Applicant must be a single mother or father with dependent children and must be the custodial parent.
      • Applicant must be TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) eligible or Pell eligible.
      • Applicant must submit an essay with the application.
      • Applicant must submit a letter of recommendation from a College faculty member, counselor or advisor.

      The Wachovia Scholars Program will award up to two (2) part-time students a maximum of $1,000 each, and up to five (5) full-time students a maximum of $2,000 each, to help alleviate the costs of tuition and fees unmet by other financial aid sources.       Wanamaker Institute Scholars Program
      The Wanamaker Institute and Community College of Philadelphia partnered to establish the Wanamaker Institute Scholars Program. This program provides an opportunity for free education and training to students meeting the established program-specific entrance requirements. Upon completion of the training program, graduates receive a certificate of achievement. Samples of training programs funded by the Wanamaker Institute include Nurse Aide, Pharmacy Technician and Medical Billing and Coding. Programs sponsored by the Wanamaker Institute sponsored programs are listed in the College’s Continuing Education brochure.

      To be considered for participation, interested students must submit an application. If accepted into the program, students will be required to pay a one-time matriculation fee of $30.       Doris Weiss Memorial Scholarship for Art Majors
      Doris Weiss began taking classes at the College in 1987. As a senior citizen, she brought with her an extensive background in the arts and was a wonderful addition to the Art department’s classes, as well as an inspiration for the students. Her focus at the College was in painting and ceramics. Upon her death in January 1993, a memorial exhibition of her many art works was held at the College. Her children presented the College with a grant from her estate in order to set up a scholarship in her name for art students.

        Eligibility Criteria
      • Applicant must be a registered Art major pursuing an associate’s degree.
      • Applicant must have accumulated at least 24 credits toward that degree by the end of the spring 2010 semester with a minimum of 12 credits in the studio.
      • Applicant must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5.
      • Applicant must fill out the application form and submit a portfolio of six works of art from the studio art classes at the College.
      • Student must be returning to the College in fall 2010.
      • The selection process is competitive and based on merit. A professional artist or teacher from outside the College will jury applicants. Scholarship money will be awarded once yearly, at the end of the spring semester, and disbursed in the following fall semester upon the students completing matriculation for that semester. Students are eligible to receive scholarship money only once during their stay at Community College of Philadelphia. Applications are distributed in March.         Barbara Wrightson Award
        The Barbara Wrightson Award is named for the late business manager of the Federation and is awarded annually by the Federation to one student who is deeply involved with family/community, maintains his/her commitments through difficult times and works without the need for high-profile rewards. This student must have accumulated 30 or more college-level credits with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher by the end of the fall term. Amount of scholarship varies. Students must be continuing their education at a college or university to be considered for eligibility. Application can be made from January 15 through March 15.
