Scholarships and Awards in Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology

Biology Department Awards
The Biology Department awards $500 scholarships for continued academic study. Five (5) awards are offered annually.

    Eligibility Criteria
  • Candidate must have sophomore status [24 credits] and a GPA of at least 3.2 or above to apply.
  • Candidate must have completed at least 12 credits of biology courses at Community College of Philadelphia and be currently enrolled in a science-related curriculum.
  • Candidate should display academic excellence in their biological coursework and overall performance.
  • A letter of recommendation from a College biology faculty member is required. A second letter of recommendation from a second College faculty member is highly recommended.

A committee of faculty from the Biology Department selects the final candidates. An interview with the candidates may be requested. Applications are available through the department and the deadline for submitting an application is in January. Awards are presented during the College's Academic Awards Ceremony. Rufus Cox Memorial Award
The Chemistry department established the Rufus Cox Memorial Award in memory of Dr. Cox, a faculty member who was known for his unselfish service to others. The award is given to a graduating student who has dedicated a significant amount of thoughtful service to the Chemistry department during his/her tenure at the College. There is no application process for this award. The Chemistry department selects the recipient based upon faculty recommendations/nominations. Harry T. Johnston Award
The Harry T. Johnston Award is presented annually to students who have demonstrated academic excellence in Analytical and Instrumental Chemistry. Based upon faculty nomination/recommendation, the Chemistry department selects the recipient. There is no application process for this award. Don Koltiska Scholarship
The Community College of Philadelphia Foundation established the Don Koltiska Scholarship Fund to award scholarships to students pursuing an associate degree in Computer Information Systems. Don Koltiska joined the College on August 30, 1976 when the College was located on 11th Street. Don was a long-time employee of the College who established personal relationships with many of the individuals he encountered. In 1998, after a tiring battle with cancer, Don passed away, leaving behind many individuals whose lives were forever touched by his spirit.

    Eligibility Criteria
  • Student must have completed a minimum of 24 credits at the College.
  • Student must be a continuing student (returning to the College the following semester).
  • Student can be enrolled on a part- or full-time basis, but must be enrolled in a minimum of six credits per semester.
  • Student must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.75 at the time of selection.

The actual amount of the award will be determined by the number of students who meet the eligibility criteria. There is no application process for this scholarship. Mathematics Department Award for Outstanding Student Achievement
The Mathematics Department Award for Outstanding Student Achievement provides a $500 scholarship to a student who has demonstrated outstanding competence in mathematics (including calculus), and high personal and academic standards.

    Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicant must be enrolled at the College.
  • Applicant must have demonstrated outstanding competence in mathematics and have completed a minimum of Calculus II.
  • Applicant must indicate his/her intention to continue studying toward a baccalaureate degree in a mathematics or mathematics-related field.
  • Applicant must submit three letters of recommendation (from faculty) with his/her application.

The recipient of this award is chosen each Spring by the Mathematics department. Applications are available in January. The deadline for submitting an application is January/February. National Chemistry Award for Outstanding Freshman
The National Chemistry Award for Outstanding Freshman is presented by CRC Publishers in conjunction with the Chemistry department. The award is presented to students who have demonstrated outstanding scholarship in College Chemistry I and II. There is no application process for this award. The Chemistry department selects the recipient based upon faculty recommendations/nominations. Awards are presented during the College's Academic Awards Ceremony. R.D. Robertson Award for Excellence in Engineering or Science
The R.D. Robertson Award for Excellence in Engineering or Science is awarded annually to a maximum of two students who show outstanding scholarship in the fields of engineering or science. There is no application process for this award. The award(s) is presented at the College's Academic Awards Ceremony. The College's Physics department administers the award. Thomas R. Scott Mathematics Award
The Thomas R. Scott Mathematics Award provides a $500 scholarship for study toward the baccalaureate to a graduating student who has demonstrated outstanding competence in mathematics (including calculus), and high personal and academic standards. This scholarship, endowed by his family, honors the memory of Thomas R. Scott, an associate professor of mathematics and a member of the faculty from 1965 until his death in 1981. The recipient of this award is chosen each Spring by the Mathematics department.

  • Applicant must be in his/her final year of study and graduating from the College in the Spring.
  • Applicant must have demonstrated outstanding competence in mathematics and have completed a minimum of Calculus II.
  • Applicant must indicate his/her intention to continue studying toward a baccalaureate degree in a mathematics or mathematics-related field.
  • Applicant must submit three letters of recommendation (from faculty) with his/her application.

Susan B. Shafter Award
Through a generous gift to the College, Mr. Shafter established the Susan B. Shafter Award in memory of his wife. This award is presented annually to students who have demonstrated academic excellence in Organic Chemistry. Based upon faculty nomination/recommendation, faculty in the Chemistry department select the recipients. There is no application process for this award. Muriel Shapp Award for Biology
The Muriel Shapp Award for Biology will be presented annually to a student who wishes to pursue a career related to biology. The student must be continuing his/her studies at the College the year following when the award is given, and must demonstrate financial need. Faculty members in the College’s Biology department will select the recipient. The recipient is selected in the Spring and is presented with a $1,000 cash award during the College’s Academic Awards Ceremony. For more information, contact the Biology department at 215.751.8432.

Professor Donald G. Slavin Memorial Scholarship
The Professor Donald G. Slavin Memorial Scholarship provides a $500 tuition award for Organic Chemistry I (CHEM 221) to one student to recognize his/her achievement in the pre-requisite Chemistry courses at the College.

    Eligibility Criteria
  • Student must have completed College Chemistry I (CHEM 121) at Community College of Philadelphia with a minimum grade of B.
  • Student must be currently enrolled in College Chemistry II (CHEM 122) at Community College of Philadelphia.
  • Student must be planning to take Organic Chemistry I (CHEM 221) at the College during the next semester (summer or fall 2009).
  • Student must possess a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 in all courses.

Your CHEM 122 instructor will need to complete the recommendation form and forward it and your application to the Chair of the Department of Chemistry in early April.

Ryan L. Thorne Technical Achievement Scholarship
Established by a graduate of the College, the Ryan L. Thorne Technical Achievement Scholarship will provide a cash award to an outstanding student to assist him/her in meeting educational expenses as he/she pursues a baccalaureate degree in a Science, Mathematics, Engineering or Technology curriculum at a four-year institution. Award is contingent upon continued funding.

    Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicant must be graduating with an associate degree in a Science, Mathematics, Engineering or Technology curriculum.
  • Applicant of African or African American descent (preferred).
  • Applicant must be transferring to a four-year institution and pursuing a baccalaureate degree in a Science, Mathematics, Engineering or Technology curriculum.
  • Applicant must submit a one-page personal statement revealing his/her qualities and strengths. In the personal statement, the applicant must address: goals for the future; barriers or hardships which have been or may be encountered along the way; why financial assistance is needed; and what he/she hopes to contribute to the field.
  • Applicant must submit a copy of his/her most recent grade report.
  • Applicant must submit one letter of recommendation from a College faculty member.

Women in Chemistry Award
The Women in Chemistry Award is presented by Susan Mogil, professor emeritus in the department of Chemistry. This $200 cash award is presented to a graduating female student in the College's Chemical Technology program. The Chemistry department selects the recipient based upon established criteria, including grade point average and courses completed. There is no application process for this award.
