Scholarships and Awards in Nursing and Allied Health Careers

Mary Earley Allen Scholarship
The Mary Earley Allen Scholarship is presented to a student(s) in the Dietetics program to assist with the costs of tuition, books, registration exam fees and/or costs associated with review courses. The recipient is chosen by Dietetics faculty. For more information, contact the Dietetics program at 215.751.8948.

Arronson-Lavine Scholarship Awards
Through the Arronson-Lavine Scholarship Awards, the College's Nursing department provides financial support to students pursuing an associate degree in Nursing.

    Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicant must be entering the second year of the College's Nursing curriculum.
  • Applicant must achieve a grade point average of 3.0 or higher (B) with a C in NURS 132 or a 2.8 or higher with a B in NURS 132 (grades are used to determine grade point average).
  • Applicant must file a financial aid application (FAFSA) regardless of economic status.
  • Applicant must sign an "Intent to Work" form for one year following graduation; recipients will be required to work at a health care facility in Philadelphia county for that year.
  • Applicant must sign the "Consent to Release Information" form when submitting application.

Selection of the recipients is competitive. Application packets are distributed in class. The deadline for submitting an application is in May. Recipients are selected by Nursing department faculty based on the eligibility criteria and application. Awards are announced in June. Brent Blundin Scholarship
The Brent Blundin Scholarship, named in honor of Brent Blundin who served as the College’s Controller until his retirement in 2005, was established to recognize the academic achievement of a student pursuing an associate degree in Nursing. This scholarship will provide a tuition award to a single parent who shows promise and is committed to the field of nursing. The recipient will be selected by Nursing department faculty based on the eligibility criteria. For more information, contact the Nursing department at 215.751.8422.

Hal Lane Chesler Memorial Scholarship
The Hal Lane Chesler Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of the late Hal Lane Chesler to assist a student pursuing a degree in Nursing. The recipient of this award must demonstrate financial hardship and academic merit. The recipient is selected by Nursing department faculty based upon the established criteria. The recipient will receive a cash award, which will be presented during the Nursing Pinning Ceremony in May. For more information, contact the Nursing department at 215.751.8422.

Dennis M. Daley Memorial Award
The Dennis M. Daley Memorial Award is presented to a student radiographer from any of the clinical affiliates to the Diagnostic Medical Imaging (DMI) program. The graduating student will have changed his/her career path leading to a definite change in his/her lifestyle and his/her goals and objectives. The recipient is selected by DMI faculty in consultation with the award sponsor. The recipient is recognized at the DMI Pinning Ceremony and receives a cash award. Ruth Booker Daniels HIT Scholarship
The Ruth Booker Daniels HIT Scholarship will benefit a student enrolled in the College's Health Information Technology (HIT) program. For more information, contact Joyce Garozzo, HIT Curriculum Supervisor, at 215.751.8946.

Independence Blue Cross Nursing Education Scholarships
Funded through the College's PHEAA Nursing Education Grant, these scholarships support students pursuing an associate degree in Nursing.

    Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicant must be enrolled in the College's Nursing program on a full-time basis (NURS 132, 232, or 916 and 12 credits of general education courses).
  • Applicant must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5.
  • Applicant must not be in default or otherwise be ineligible to receive a federally guaranteed student loan.
  • Applicant must submit a completed application.
  • Applicant cannot be related to a member of the scholarship selection committee.

Application packets are distributed by the Nursing department in January. Recipients are selected by Nursing department faculty based on the eligibility criteria and application. Independence Foundation Community Nursing Interns
Through the Independence Foundation Community Nursing Interns program, the College's Nursing department provides students an opportunity to enhance their educational experience through internships.

    Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicant must be graduating from the College's Nursing program.
  • Applicant must have participated in the National Institutes of Health-funded program to encourage minority students to seek higher education degrees.
  • Applicant must enroll in a baccalaureate Nursing program.
  • Applicant must serve the community by working with Nursing department faculty and students in the 19130 Zip Code Project.

Selection of the recipients is competitive and is at the discretion of Nursing department faculty. Application packets are distributed by the Nursing department in early Spring. Awards are announced in June. For more information, contact the Nursing department at 215.751.8422.

Independence Foundation Scholarship Awards
Through the Independence Foundation Scholarship Awards program, the College's Nursing department provides financial support to students pursuing an associate degree in Nursing.

Harold E. Kohn Memorial Fund Scholarship
The Harold E. Kohn Memorial Fund provides scholarships to students pursuing an associate degree in Nursing at the College.

    Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicant must be enrolled in the associate in applied science program in Nursing.
  • Applicant must be a Philadelphia resident.
  • Applicant must qualify for placement into English 101 or require no more than one semester of developmental courses.
  • Applicant must submit a written statement describing his/her reasons for pursuing the field of Nursing.
  • Applicant must maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.5 in the semester for which the scholarship is received.

Selection of the recipients is competitive. The number of scholarships awarded is contingent upon the amount of funds available. Application packets are distributed in class. Recipients are selected by Nursing department faculty based on the eligibility criteria and application. Awards are announced in June. Dr. Thomas W. Langfitt Endowment for Nursing Scholarships
The Dr. Thomas W. Langfitt Endowment for Nursing Scholarships, established in memory of Dr. Thomas W. Langfitt, who served on the College’s Board of Trustees until his death in 2005, will recognize a student pursuing an associate degree in Nursing who demonstrates outstanding community service. One award of $500 will be given annually to assist a student in pursuing his/her goal to become a registered nurse.

    Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicant must be enrolled in Community College of Philadelphia’s Nursing Program prior to applying for this scholarship.
  • Applicant can be enrolled on a full-time or part-time basis, but must have completed a minimum of six (6) credit hours in every semester. The six (6) credit minimum does not apply to coursed taken during the summer sessions.
  • Applicant must have completed and earned a minimum of 24 credits towards an associate’s degree in nursing.
  • Applicant must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
  • Applicant must be attending the College in fall 2008.
  • Applicant must be involved in community endeavors in a volunteer capacity.

Dr. Edna B. McKenzie Scholarship for Disadvantaged Students
The Dr. Edna B. McKenzie Scholarship for Disadvantaged Students was established to provide a new source of financial support for disadvantage students in Pennsylvania pursuing a degree in nursing. Selection of applicants is based on financial need and other eligibility criteria. For more information, contact the Nursing department at 215.751.8422.

PHEAA (Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency) Nursing Scholarships
Funded through the College's PHEAA Nursing Education Grant, these scholarships support students pursuing an associate degree in Nursing.

Scholarships for Disadvantaged (Nursing) Students
Through the Scholarships for Disadvantaged (Nursing) Students program, students enrolled in the College's associate degree in Nursing program are eligible for financial assistance.

    Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicant must be enrolled in the College's Nursing program on a full-time basis (NURS 132, 232, or 916 and 12 credits of general education courses).
  • Applicant must be from an economically and/or environmentally disadvantaged background as defined by federal guidelines.

Recipients are selected by Nursing department faculty based on the eligibility criteria and application. Future availability is contingent upon continued funding. For more information, contact the Nursing department at 215.751.8422.

Spirit of Medical Assisting Award
First awarded in 2005, this $200 monetary award is presented to a student enrolled in the Medical Assisting curriculum. The recipient is selected by faculty recommendation. The selection criteria include: scholastic achievement, community service and leadership. The award will be presented at the College's Academic Awards Ceremony.

Temple Nursing Alumni Association Scholarship
This award was established by the Temple University Alumni Association to recognize a student pursuing a degree in Nursing. One cash award of $400 will be awarded to assist a student pursuing his/her goals to become a registered nurse.

    Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicant must be enrolled in Community College of Philadelphia’s Nursing Program prior to applying for this scholarship.
  • Applicant can be enrolled on a full-time or part-time basis, but must have completed a minimum of six (6) credit hours in every semester. The six (6) credit minimum does not apply to courses taken during the summer sessions.
  • Applicant must have completed and earned a minimum of 24 credits towards his/her associate degree.
  • Applicant must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
  • Applicant must be attending Community College of Philadelphia in spring 2009.
  • Applicant must submit a two-page essay with the application.
