
Scholarships and Awards in Early Childhood Education and Education
Ruth Holmes Bacon Award of Excellence
Established in 1989, the Ruth Holmes Bacon Award of Excellence
honors the memory of Ruth Bacon, an instructor in the College's Early
Childhood Education (ECE) program. Her creativity in the classroom, her
warm and perceptive style and her commitment to mothers returning to school
inspired the ECE advisory committee and faculty to establish an award
in her name. The award is given annually to a graduate of the ECE program
who demonstrates professional promise. The $1,500 scholarship is sent
directly to the baccalaureate-degree granting institution to which the
recipient is transferring.

Eligibility Criteria
- Applicant must be enrolled in the College's Early Childhood Education program.
- Applicant must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
- Applicant must have completed, or will complete, the requirements for an associate degree at the College by the end of Summer I 2009.
- Applicant must be transferring to a four-year institution pursuing a baccalaureate degree in Early Childhood Education.
Selection of the recipient is competitive and is made by faculty in the Early Childhood Education program. Applications are distributed in January. The deadline for submitting an application is late February. Recipients are announced at the College's Academic Awards Ceremony. Ruth Holmes Bacon Minority Student Fellowship
Established in 2004, the Award honors the late Ruth Bacon, an instructor
in the Early Childhood Education Program at Community College of Philadelphia.
This scholarship is designed to increase the involvement of students
of Asian and Hispanic origin in the Early Childhood Education Program.
A scholarship award of up to $1,500 will be made to a current student
at the College in order to fund study in Early Childhood Education.
The award will pay for tuition and fees, and will be applied directly
to the recipient’s tuition account.

Eligibility Criteria
- Applicant must be currently enrolled at the College.
- Applicant must be admitted to the Early Childhood Education Program (having the minimum 2.0 grade point average, College-English ready, and cleared for criminal history, child abuse and free of communicable disease).
- Applicant must have completed a minimum of 12 credits as of fall 2008 and have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0.
- Member of a minority group preferred, with preference given to students of Asian and Hispanic descent.
- Applicant must be continuing his/her studies at the College for the 2009/2010 academic year.
Selection of the scholarship recipient is competitive and is made by faculty in the ECE program. Applicants will be notified of the selection committee’s decision by April. The recipient will be announced at the College’s Academic Awards Ceremony. Actual receipt of the scholarship funds is dependent upon continued enrollment in the College’s ECE program for the 2009/2010 academic year. Louis Bank Outstanding Achievement in Education Award
The Louis Bank Outstanding Achievement in Education Award is given annually by the family of Mr. Louis Bank to an Education student whose high achievements in coursework at Community College of Philadelphia indicate academic potential to pursue a career in the field of Education. In addition, the student demonstrates an interest in the field by having worked with children or adolescents in a mentoring, tutoring, or child care activity.

- Applicant must have completed 30 credits by the end of the Spring semester of the year in which the application is submitted.
- Applicant must be enrolled in the Education Curriculum.
- Applicant must have taken at least one of the following Education courses: EDUC 201, 202, 225, 226.
- Applicant must submit a cover letter and essay describing his/her reason for wanting to become a teacher and stating what contribution he/she can make to the field of education.
Selection of the recipient is competitive and is made by faculty in the Education department. Applications are distributed in February. The deadline for submitting the application is in March. Frankford Day Nursery Early Childhood Education Scholarship
The Frankford Day Nursery Early Childhood Education Scholarship
will provide a tuition scholarship for one academic year (fall and spring semesters) for students who meet the established eligibility and selection criteria. Actual receipt of the scholarship is contingent upon continued attendance at Community College of Philadelphia. Funds are applied directly to tuition accounts. The actual number of recipients will be determined at the discretion of the scholarship selection committee. The actual amount of the scholarship award will vary, with the maximum amounts set at $2,000 for full-time students and $1,000 for part-time students.

Eligibility Criteria
- Applicant must be currently enrolled in the College’s Early Childhood Education Program.
- Applicant can be enrolled on a full-time or part-time basis for the fall 2009 semester.
- Applicant must have completed and earned a minimum of 30 college credits by the end of the spring 2009 semester.
- Applicant must submit an essay with his/her application.
- Applicant must submit a copy of his/her most recent College transcript.

Goldschlager Future Teacher Award
The Goldschlager Future Teacher Award is presented annually to
one student to encourage future study in the field of education and teacher
preparation.

Terri Lynne Lokoff Child Care Foundation Scholarship
Fred and Kay Lokoff established the Terri Lynne Lokoff Child Care Foundation
to honor the memory of their daughter, Terri Lynne, who died tragically
in an automobile accident. The Lokoff Foundation, which supports many
childcare causes, annually provides two $1,500 scholarships to students
graduating from the College's Early Childhood Education (ECE) program.
Recipients of this scholarship must be committed to working in childcare
or to continuing their formal education in the field. Funds will be sent
directly to the baccalaureate degree-granting institution to which
the
recipient is transferring.

Shirley A. Page Future Teacher Scholarship
The Shirley A. Page Future Teacher Scholarship is given to an Education student who plans to teach in an elementary school, particularly in an urban environment. Preference is given to African-American and/or minority students.

Eligibility Criteria
- Applicant must be a Philadelphia resident pursuing an Associate of Arts Degree in Education at Community College of Philadelphia.
- Applicant must have successfully completed EDUC 201 and EDUC 202.
- Applicant must have a minimum 2.75 grade point average.
- Applicant must be a full-time student.
- Applicant must demonstrate financial need.

The Pearson Allyn & Bacon Award for Excellence in Education is given annually
by Pearson Allyn & Bacon to encourage one of award for College's students
to pursue a career in the field of education.
