Wanamaker Institute Scholars Program

The Wanamaker Institute Scholars Program and Community College of Philadelphia have partnered to establish the Wanamaker Institute Scholars program. The goal of the program is to assist individuals who are underemployed or unemployed gain the knowledge and skills necessary to obtain employment. The program provides the opportunity for free education and training to students meeting established selection criteria.

To be considered for admission to the Wanamaker Institute Scholars Program, individuals must submit a program application. Class size is limited; therefore, not all applicants will be admitted to the program. All applications will be reviewed and evaluated. Selected applicants must attend an orientation and meet the entrance requirements for their program of interest to be considered. Please refer to specific program description for requirements.

Students admitted to the program will be designated as Wanamaker Scholars. Upon successful completion of their training, program graduates will receive a certificate of achievement.

To apply to the Wanamaker Institute Scholars Program, you may call 215.751.8763. If accepted into the program, students will be required to pay a one-time matriculation fee of $30.

Nurse Aide Program
126 hours
The Nurse Aide course, which includes classroom lecture, lab skills and clinical practicum, prepares individuals for employment in long term care facilities, hospitals, and nursing homes. Training topics include the role and function of the Nurse Aide, resident rights, nutrition, abuse and neglect prevention, infection control, psychosocial needs, safety and accident prevention, personal care skills, communication skills, and legal and ethical aspects of long term care. Participants will be prepared to sit for the State Board exam at the completion of the course. Note: Prospective participants must hold a high school diploma or GED and are required to take reading comprehension and math tests. Participants must pass a general physical examination, a two-step test for tuberculosis and must undergo a criminal background check.

Pharmacy Technician Certification
75 hours
Join the pharmacy team! This comprehensive 75 hour course, including 10 hours of instruction concentrating on mathematics for pharmacy use, will prepare the student to assist the pharmacist in filling prescriptions in a variety of pharmacy settings, including hospital, community, home infusion and mail order pharmacies. Course content will include learning all activities involved in preparing prescriptions: reading and interpreting prescriptions, dose calculations, IV flow rates and medication actions and reactions. An extensive review of basic mathematics for pharmacy use, along with reimbursement, billing and inventory control will be included in the curriculum. Upon completion of this course, the student will be prepared to sit for the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board exam. Note: Prospective participants must hold a high school diploma or GED, are required to pass reading comprehension and math tests and must undergo a criminal background check.

Medical Billing and Coding Program
80 hours
Medical Billing and Coding is one of the fastest growing careers in the health care industry today! The need for professionals that understand how to code health care procedures and services for third party insurance reimbursement is growing substantially. This 80-hour course, which includes 20 hours of medical terminology instruction, offers the skills needed to solve insurance billing problems, manually file claims using the CPT and ICD-9 manuals, complete common insurance forms, trace delinquent claims and use generic forms to streamline billing procedures. Students will learn how to find the service codes using CPT and ICD-9 coding manuals and will gain experience using The Medical Manager software. Note: Prospective participants must hold a high school diploma or GED, must have at least 3 years experience in medical billing, and are required to pass basic skills, personnel, and data entry tests.
