Community College of Philadelphia Foundation Board

As the private funding development arm of the College, the Foundation seeks to support the College’s mission by bringing together community leaders who will serve as ambassadors of the College, broadening the College’s image within the community. The Foundation serves the College by creating partnerships with individuals, businesses, organizations and foundations to raise private gifts for scholarships, instructional equipment, professional development and capital needs of the College.

Kernie L. Anderson
General Manager, 900 AM WURD

Kernie L. Anderson
Mr. Anderson has held many positions during his long and successful career in radio, including program director, chairman/CEO for African World News Program; program director, general manager and consultant for Florida-based stations; general manager at WMBX-AM/FM in Chicago; general manager at WBXM-AM/FM in Cincinnati; general manager at WDAS-AM/FM in Philadelphia; and station manager at WBLS-FM in New York City. Under his leadership, WDAS AM/FM were the top-rated adult radios in Philadelphia for several years. Currently, Mr. Anderson serves as general manager of 900 AM WURD.

He is a former member of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, the Philadelphia Radio Organization, the ACLU and the NAACP. He is a former board member of the Southeastern chapter of the Red Cross, the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania and the Urban League.

Mr. Anderson was educated at Howard University and the University of Maryland, Korean Extension School.

Lorraine H. Brown
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, The Temple Group, Inc.

Lorraine H. Brown
In her role as Chairman and CEO, Dr. Brown oversees the financial planning, development, implementation and management of major multimillion dollar construction projects for the firm she organized in 1985. In the 1980s, she served as deputy city managing director for the city of Philadelphia in Mayor William F. Green’s administration, where she was responsible for policy, management and coordination of a third of all city services. Dr. Brown joined the Foundation Board in 2006.

Dr. Brown has served on the board of trustees for numerous organizations in the Philadelphia area, including Peirce College, WHYY public radio and television stations, Philadelphia Urban League, Walnut Street Theater, Medical College of Pennsylvania Hospital and Medical School, St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children and the African-American Museum in Philadelphia.

Dr. Brown earned a Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University and completed the Harvard Business School’s Owner/President Management program, an executive business program for chief executive officers.

Bruce Caswell
Associate Professor of Political Science, Rowan University

Bruce Caswell
Dr. Caswell has taught at Rowan since 1989, where he has been the department chair, vice president of AFT Local 2373 and most recently, president of the Rowan University Senate. He has also taught at Temple University, Rutgers University Camden, La Salle University and the University of Pennsylvania.

Prior to his teaching career, Dr. Caswell worked for several years organizing neighborhood groups at the Institute for the Study of Civic Values in Philadelphia. He also spent three years working for the United States Department of Health, Education and Welfare in roles as an intergovernmental relations specialist, policy development analyst and urban planner.

Before joining the Foundation Board in 2006, Dr. Caswell served on the Community College of Philadelphia Board of Trustees for 13 years, where he was actively involved in the Foundation Board as a representative of the Trustee Board. As a trustee, Dr. Caswell has served on the Academic Affairs, Intergovernmental Affairs and Business Affairs Committees.

Dr. Caswell earned an A.B. in Sociology from the University of Chicago, a Masters in City Planning from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in Political Science from Rutgers University.

Stanley S. Cohen, Esq.
Senior Counsel, Fox Rothschild LLP

Stanley S. Cohen
As senior counsel, Mr. Cohen is responsible for managing the leasing, construction and project supervision of the firm’s real estate facilities. He is former chair of the Real Estate department, as well as the firm’s former administrative partner, completing his six-year term in March 2005. As administrative partner, Mr. Cohen oversaw the firm’s multiple offices; worked with the office managing partners to implement legal, administrative and organization strategies; and served as the nonvoting chair of the firm’s executive committee.

Currently, Mr. Cohen is an appointee of the Speaker of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives to the Pennsylvania Economic Development Financing Authority. He has served as an appointee of former Governor Tom Ridge to the Board of Directors of the Ben Franklin Technology Development Authority and the Pennsylvania State Commission for Women. In addition, Mr. Cohen is past president of Har Zion Temple and the Auerbach Central Agency for Jewish Education, as well as a former board of trustees member of the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia and the Greentree School.

Mr. Cohen earned a B.S. with honors and a LL.B. from Temple University.

Stephen M. Curtis
President, Community College of Philadelphia

Dr. Curtis is the fifth person to hold the post of president since the College opened in 1965. Prior to joining the College in 1999, Dr. Curtis held the position of president at Hudson Valley Community College/SUNY and City University of New York (CUNY). He also has served as acting president of Queens College and Borough of Manhattan Community College.

In addition to his duties as president, Dr. Curtis actively participates on a number of boards and advisory committees in the Philadelphia community. Notable among them are the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce Board; the Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition Board; the Free Library of Philadelphia Board; the Life Science Career Alliance Board, where he serves as chair; and the Philadelphia Workforce Investment Board. He is also a past president of the Pennsylvania Commission for Community Colleges.

Dr. Curtis earned an A.B. in Music from Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont and a Master of Music and Ph.D. in Music from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

George E. Davis
Senior Vice President of Human Resources, Lincoln Financial Group (retired)

George E. Davis
Mr. Davis has been involved with several workforce and educational organizations, including serving as chairman of the board for the Philadelphia Workforce Investment Board, vice president of the board for Philadelphia Futures and member of the board of overseers for the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education. He believes that education is necessary in order for the United States and its workers to compete in today's global economy.
Previous to his 12-year tenure at Lincoln Financial Group, Mr. Davis was the director of Corporate Executive Resources and Human Resources Strategy at Eastman Kodak.

His awards include the Liberty Bell Award from the mayor of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Futures "Hats Off" award.

Mr. Davis earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from Boston College and completed the Harvard Business School's Advanced Management program.

Richard S. Downs
Vice Chairman, American Foodservice Corporation

Richard S. Downs
Mr. Downs oversees multiple departments and is responsible for tax and investment management as vice chairman. He has been a member of the Foundation Board since 1995 and is one of the inaugural members of the board. Throughout his career, Mr. Downs has made mentoring students in higher education a priority. He established the Dr. Edward Anderson Student Scholarship, the College’s first scholarship endowment, to honor a professor who had a profound impact on his life.

Mr. Downs is a former accounting instructor at the College, and he volunteers extensively with local, nonprofit educational, religious and cultural institutions. He serves on numerous boards, including Penn Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania Health System and Valley View Community Church.

Mr. Downs earned an A.A.S. in General Business from Community College of Philadelphia, a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Drexel University and a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Finance from Temple University.

Varsovia Fernandez
President and Chief Executive Officer, Greater Philadelphia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce

Varsovia Fernandez
Ms. Fernandez joined the Greater Philadelphia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (GPHCC) in March 2006. During her tenure, she has helped the Chamber achieve record levels of membership, revenues and member-driven activities.

Ms. Fernandez launched GPHCC’s Professional Mentoring Network, a workforce development initiative to help Hispanic professionals connect with executives and with Hispanic youth. Under her leadership, the Chamber has created a voice for Hispanic business in the region by developing a programmatic strategy that helps build on the small business, professional and corporate Hispanic markets.

Prior to GPHCC, Ms. Fernandez worked with Congreso de Latinos Unidos as vice president of External Affairs. While at Congreso, she worked to maximize government and corporate relations as an advocate of the Latino community. Ms. Fernandez established strong relationships with legislators and worked with state and national organizations to introduce Workforce Investment Act, TANF, domestic violence and immigration legislation to Capitol Hill, as well as introduce domestic violence and utility protection legislation in Pennsylvania.

Actively committed to philanthropic work, she serves on various boards and coalitions, including the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Community College of Philadelphia Board of Trustees and the Foundation Board, the Pennsylvania Intergovernmental Cooperative Authority and Philadelphia’s Zoning Code Commission.

Ms. Fernandez was born in the Dominican Republic, attended Temple University and graduated from Rosemont College.

Zell Kravinsky
Vice President for Real Estate Acquisitions, IDT Capital

Zell Kravinsky
Dr. Kravinsky began real estate investing in 1978 and plunged into major acquisitions later in his career, using a system he designed himself. His tremendous charity and philanthropic efforts are focused on racial equality in health care, infectious disease prevention and treatment, reform of the organ procurement system and urging a broader sense of charity among all Americans. One of his donations included a kidney that he gave to a stranger that would have otherwise died of kidney disease. In one year, Dr. Kravinsky donated more than $45 million, mostly to charities involved with global public health issues. In addition, he has worked with children in inner-city schools and served as a professor of Renaissance Literature at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Kravinsky has been recognized by many groups and organizations and received a resolution from the Pennsylvania Legislature honoring him for his extraordinary compassion. He has been covered by television, radio and newspapers throughout the world and has been featured on “The CBS Early Show” and CNN.

Dr. Kravinsky earned his bachelor’s degree in Asian Studies from Dartmouth College and two doctorates from the University of Pennsylvania with concentrations in Composition Theory and poet John Milton.

W. Scott Magargee, III
Partner, Dechert LLP

W. Scott Magargee
Mr. Magargee specializes in the legal areas of employee benefits and executive compensation and is a former chair of Dechert’s Pension Investment Committee. Mr. Magargee served on the Foundation Board since 1998 and was the Foundation Board president from 1999 to 2004. He has also supported the College through his involvement on the College’s Strategic Planning Committee.

A member of the American Bar Association for more than 35 years, Mr. Magargee is also a fellow of the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel and is recognized as one of the best Pennsylvania-based employee benefits lawyers in Corporate Counsel's 2005 edition of Best Lawyers: Employee Benefits Law.

Mr. Magargee serves on the board of directors for the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania, where he serves on their Public Policy Committee; and the Paoli Memorial Hospital, where he is a member of the Ethics Committee. Mr. Magargee is the recipient of many community service awards, most notably the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania Committed Community Volunteer Award in 2005 and the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania Citizen Volunteer of the Year Award in 2002.

Mr. Magargee earned his B.A. from Princeton University and his Bachelor of Laws degree from Yale University School of Law.

Lorina Marshall-Blake
Vice President of Government Relations, Independence Blue Cross

Lorina Marshall-Blake

Ms. Marshall-Blake works with local, state and federal legislators and agencies on matters related to Independence Blue Cross, where she has been vice president of Government Relations since 1991. She has more than 23 years of experience in corporate management, public relations and communications. Previously, Ms. Marshall held the position of vice president for Government Relations and Urban Affairs at Philadelphia Gas Works.

A registered lobbyist in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C., Ms. Marshall’s people-centered approach to problem solving and project implementation has been the key to her success. Her numerous list of professional affiliations include the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, Blue Cross/Blue Shield Association Federal Relations Committee, the Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition and the United Negro College Fund. In addition, she serves on the boards of several organizations, including the Ogontz Avenue Revitalization Partnership, New Horizon Education Center, Forum of Executive Women, the YMCA of Philadelphia and BEBASHI, a full-service HIV/AIDS case management agency that specializes in assisting low-income people of color. In 2008, she was named one of Philadelphia’s most influential African American leaders by The Philadelphia Tribune.

Ms. Marshall earned a bachelor’s degree in Human Services from Antioch College and a master’s degree in Government Administration from the University of Pennsylvania.

Stephen Mullin
Senior Vice President and Principal, Econsult Corporation

Stephen Mullin
Mr. Mullin is senior vice president and principal of Econsult Corporation, a consulting practice that concentrates on state and public finance, economics and policy analysis for local governments, not-for-profit institutions and government development agencies.

Mr. Mullin served as the city of Philadelphia's director of Commerce from 1993 to 2000, where he chaired the mayor's Economic Development Cabinet and Executive Committee. Other prior posts include positions as director of Finance for the city of Philadelphia, budget director for the city of St. Louis and director of Corporate Development for the Laclede Gas Company.

Currently, he teaches economics at the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University, Widener University, Philadelphia University and Peirce College. In addition, he chairs the Optimum Trust Mutual Funds, serves as treasurer of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and the Independence Visitor Center Corporation and is on the board of the Union League of Philadelphia. He serves on various other boards for area organizations, including The Haverford Trust Company, the Philadelphia Sports Congress, the Charter School Resource Center and Curtain Call Creations. He also served as president of the Harvard Radcliffe Club of Philadelphia

Mr. Mullin graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with an undergraduate degree in Economics and earned a M.A. in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania.

George W. Nise
President and CEO (retired), Beneficial Savings Bank

George W. Nise
George W. Nise graduated from Temple University in 1964 and went on to Wisconsin University School of Bank Administration. He began his career as a Pennsylvania Senior Bank examiner until he joined Beneficial Savings Bank in 1970. Nise led Beneficial to expansion in the local communities to better serve its customers through outstanding service and a “hometown” presence. In January 2007, he retired as President and CEO of the Bank.

Nise has been very involved in the community, including affiliations with the American Heart Association, Police Athletic League, Citizens Crime Commission, and the Hero Scholarship Fund of Philadelphia. He is a member of several boards, including Holy Redeemer Health System, Holy Family College, Pennsylvania Association of Community Banks and the Comprehensive Learning Center. He assists in the banking community by working with the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Bankers Association, the Financial Managers Society and the Bank Administration Institute, among others. Nise’s community service has led him to be the recipient of several honors and awards, including the Eagles Fly for Leukemia Corporate Recipient in 2001, the Police Athletic League award in 2004, and the CYO Hall of Fame Award in 2007.

Almarin Phillips

Almarin Phillips
Dr. Phillips was a professor, fellow, author and editor. He was professor emeritus of Public Policy and Management at the Wharton School and professor emeritus of Economics and Law at the University of Pennsylvania. With eight books and over 100 contributions to published articles to his credit, he was a leading expert on business, antitrust and economic regulation. Dr. Phillips had been on the Foundation Board since 2005 and was a member of the Board’s Investment Committee until his passing in 2006. His interests included industrial organization, regulation and the economics of technical change, the telecommunications industry and the analysis of financial markets.

In addition, he was chairman and president of Almarin Phillips, Inc., a former dean for the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Public and Urban Policy and a director and executive committee member of the International Telecommunications Society.

Dr. Phillips earned a B.A. in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania, an M.A. in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University.

Susan Piergallini
Vice President for Institutional Advancement, Community College of Philadelphia Executive Director, Community College of Philadelphia Foundation

Susan Piergallini
Ms. Piergallini is the chief advancement officer for Philadelphia’s only public, postsecondary institution of education. In this capacity, Ms. Piergallini provides visionary guidance for increasing the level of overall resources the College receives from public and private sources. She also serves as a primary facilitator in the establishment, maintenance and strengthening of relationships between the College’s internal constituents and critical external funding sources. Under her direction, the College Foundation’s overall assets have increased by more than 44 percent during the last three years; this remarkable growth includes a 92 percent increase in endowments and a nearly 34 percent growth in the annual fund.

In addition to her role as vice president for Institutional Advancement, Ms. Piergallini is also executive director of the College Foundation, bringing together community leaders to raise private gifts to meet the needs of the College. She also currently serves as the executive assistant to the president of the College. As such, Ms. Piergallini has spearheaded such wide-ranging projects as designing and implementing comprehensive program audits of the College’s central administrative functions, chairing and coordinating search committees for cabinet-level positions and other key functions that ensure the continued overall health and growth of the institution. Ms. Piergallini represents the College and Foundation as an active member of the Wanamaker Institute of Industries board, an organization which has been significantly benefiting under- and unemployed Philadelphians for more than 125 years.

Ms. Piergallini earned her master’s degree in Public Administration from Widener University.

A.E. Piscopo
CEO and COO, Glenmede Trust Company

A.E. Piscopo
Mr. Piscopo serves as CEO and COO of Glenmede Trust Company, a national private wealth management advisory firm headquartered in Philadelphia. Previously, he served as executive vice president and COO, senior vice president and CFO and vice president and treasurer at Glenmede. He has been a Foundation Board member since 2000 and is currently the Foundation Board president. In addition, he serves on a number of Foundation Committees.

Mr. Piscopo is a director in the World Affairs Council and member of the Pennsylvania Bankers Association, The Union League and the Foreign Policy Research Institute. During the period 1991-2004, Mr. Piscopo was director of the Opera Company of Philadelphia and served on its Finance Committee as vice president, treasurer and chairman. Other previous community service includes positions as trustee for the Drexel Hill School of the Holy Child, director for the World Affairs Council, member of the College of Business and Management Advisory Board at Drexel University and member of the School of Business and Management Advisory Board at Temple University.

Esther Ponnocks
Vice President, Community Care and Development Corporation

Esther Ponnocks
Ms. Ponnocks manages all aspects of program development, government relations and community affairs at the Community Care and Development Corporation, a nonprofit organization. Her previous position as senior executive vice president of Geriatric and Medical Companies, Inc., included the management of all aspects of health care services for elderly residents, program development, community relations and education and training.

As an operations executive with over three decades of experience in health and human services, Ms. Ponnocks is a staunch advocate for equality in higher education. She has dedicated her life to serving the Philadelphia community, and her vast service contributions include participation on dozens of boards and committees, such as the American Health Care Association, Governor’s Council on Aging, Commission on Human Relations and the Philadelphia Crime Commission.

Her commitment to the city has been widely recognized throughout her career as she has earned numerous civic awards, citations and commendations by both public and private organizations in the area, such as the Philadelphia Fire and Police departments, the New Jersey Association of Health Care Facilities, the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations and the Delaware Valley Philippino Community.

Joseph Rizzello
CEO and Chairman, NSX Holdings
CEO, The MindCapitalGroup

Joseph Rizzello
Mr. Rizzello is CEO and chairman of NSX Holdings, the nation’s first all-electronic stock exchange. Mr. Rizzello is also a founding partner of the MindCapitalGroup, a financial service strategic planning advisory firm. Previously, he was managing director of Pershing and a principal at Vanguard Brokerage Services. He has also served as an executive vice president for the Philadelphia Stock Exchange and president of the Philadelphia Board of Trade. Mr. Rizzello has been a member of the Community College of Philadelphia Foundation Board since 1999.

A member of the New York Stock Exchange, Mr. Rizzello currently serves as senior advisor for the National Stock Exchange Board of Trustees. He has also served on the International Visitors Council of Philadelphia Board, Temple University’s Business Curriculum Advisory Board and the Pennsylvania Partnership on Economic Education Board. He has lectured extensively on equities, equity options and sector index options, as well as foreign exchange risk management for private and public sector institutions around the world.

Donn Scott
Executive Vice President, Government Banking, Wachovia Bank

Donn Scott
Mr. Scott, a banking veteran with more than 35 years of experience, is responsible for managing and growing relationships with city, county and state entities, as well as educational and non-profit institutions. Previously at Wachovia he was executive vice president with responsibility for Commercial Banking and Business Development in the Greater Philadelphia market and regional president for Philadelphia/Delaware, group head of National Middle Market Division and head of the Regional South Division. He has served on the College’s Foundation Board since 2002.

His other community activities include membership on the boards of the Free Library of Philadelphia Foundation, the African-American Museum in Philadelphia, Lincoln University, the Police Athletic League of Philadelphia and the Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition.

G. Steve Simons
Investment Advisor, Gibraltar Wealth Management LLC

G. Steve Simons
Mr. Simons is an investment advisor for Gibraltar Wealth Management LLC, which provides financial and investment consulting services. He is also an investment account executive with Cresap, Incorporated, a full service securities brokerage firm.

His previous positions include president of Rutherford Brown & Catherwood, LLC, which provides investment services to individuals and families, endowment funds, foundations and institutions and investment advisor at Trident Advisors. He has served on the Foundation Board since 1995. Mr. Simons served on several of the College’s Middle States Accreditation committees.

Mr. Simons is an adjunct instructor at Community College of Philadelphia and La Salle University. In addition, Mr. Simons served on the Business Advisory Board, a part of Executive on Campus and as chairman of the M.B.A. alumni for La Salle University.

Mr. Simons earned an associate’s degree from Community College of Philadelphia and a Bachelor of Science in Management and M.B.A. from La Salle University.

Michael Smith
Vice President, Reading, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh offices, CNA Insurance

Michael Smith
Mr. Smith is currently the vice president of the Reading, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh offices of CNA Insurance, the 7th largest U.S. commercial insurer and the 14th largest U.S. property and casualty insurer. Prior to joining CNA, Mr. Smith served as senior vice president at Marsh and vice president at Kemper Insurance Companies. He has been a member of the Foundation Board since 2002.

Mr. Smith’s community interests include memberships on the Scholarship Committee of the Insurance Society Board, United Way Leadership Committee and Executive Board of the YMCA.

Very involved in his alma mater’s alumni association, Mr. Smith serves on the alumni board of directors at Colgate University. He established the Adam Clayton Powell Jr. scholarship in 1997, which provides financial assistance to one or more students with preference given to those from a background that is historically underrepresented on campus and who have demonstrated service to their communities.

Craig Stock
Principal, Corporate Communications, The Vanguard Group

Craig Stock
Mr. Stock is principal of Corporate Communications at The Vanguard Group in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. He has worked at Vanguard since February 1995, when he joined the company as a senior writer. From September 1981 through January 1995, he worked for The Philadelphia Inquirer in various roles, including financial columnist, business editor and financial reporter. From May 1975 through August 1981, he worked for The Wichita Eagle (Kansas) as a reporter and editor.

He graduated from the University of Kansas in 1975 with a B.S. degree in Journalism. During the 1979 1980 academic year, he attended Princeton University as a Sloan Fellow in Economics Journalism, a fellowship program overseen by Princeton's Woodrow Wilson School.

Mark Thompson

Mark Thompson
In his role at Citizens Bank, Mr. Thompson is responsible for the Middle States Region Government Banking Group. Mr. Thompson has 26 years of experience in senior management positions in finance, investment banking, public accounting and commercial and residential real estate lending. He is also a Certified Public Accountant. He joined the Community College of Philadelphia Foundation Board in 2003 and currently chairs the board’s Investment Committee. In addition, he is a member of the board of directors for the Philadelphia-based Reinvestment Fund.

During his tenure at Citizens Bank, Mr. Thompson has held various positions, including president and CEO of Citizens Mortgage Company and senior vice president and CFO of Citizens Mortgage Company. Previously, he served as executive vice president and CFO at Lenders Service Inc. in Pittsburgh and as executive vice president and CFO at Admiralty Advisors Inc. in Boston.

Mr. Thompson earned a B.S. in Accounting and Computer Science and a master's degree in Finance from Boston College.

Patricia Weigand
Health Care Operations Consultant

Patricia Weigand
Ms. Weigand is a health care operations consultant and a former president of the Eastern Pennsylvania Regional Service Center of Magellan Behavioral Health, a leader in behavioral health managed care in the Philadelphia area. In addition to her expertise in managed care operations, Ms. Weigand is a former editor of The Journal of Nuclear Medicine Technology, a national scientific journal. She has served on the Community College of Philadelphia Foundation Board since 2001 and served as secretary. She is also a member of the Board’s Fundraising Committee.

Ms. Weigand has supported education in Philadelphia as a sponsor and mentor through a number of initiatives, including the Philadelphia Futures program. She is also a member of the Elfreth’s Alley Association Board.

Ms. Weigand earned a B.A. from the University of Texas and a M.S. in Health Administration from Saint Joseph’s University.

Gilbert Wetzel is senior vice president of the Mayer Leadership Group, where he specializes in succession planning, developing boards and maintaining effective management and board relationships. Mr. Wetzel is a former CEO of Bell Atlantic of Pennsylvania and is currently vice chair of Community College of Philadelphia’s Board of Trustees. He is a founding member and former president of the Foundation Board.

Mr. Wetzel’s extensive professional career includes roles as chairman and CEO of Verizon Pennsylvania and Delaware and CEO of Geographic Business Publishers, Inc., the publisher of Business Philadelphia magazine. He serves on the boards of the American Computer and Electronics Corporation and Greater Philadelphia First Partnership for Economic Development Coalition. Mr. Wetzel is also a past chairman of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce and former trustee of Pennsylvania State University.

Mr. Wetzel earned a B.S. in Engineering from Pennsylvania State University, where he is a member of the Distinguished Alumni Society.

William A. Whiteside, Jr.
Mr. Whiteside practiced labor and employment law for more than 40 years. As head of the firm’s Labor and Employment Law department, he represented the College in a variety of matters for nearly 25 years. A member emeritus of the Foundation Board, Mr. Whiteside was instrumental in the establishment of the College’s Paralegal Studies program. He still serves on the Paralegal Studies advisory board.

Presently, Mr. Whiteside is a board member of La Salle College High School and member of the President’s Advisory Council at the University of Notre Dame. In addition, he is a trustee of the American College of Management and Technology of Dubrovnik, Croatia, a joint venture between Rochester Institute of Technology and the Croatian government. Mr. Whiteside is also chairman emeritus of the board of trustees of Rochester Institute of Technology. He and his wife, Eileen, received the Nathaniel Rochester Society’s Award in 2003 for outstanding services to RIT. Mr. Whiteside and his wife are the only individuals living outside of the Rochester, New York area to receive this honor. Previously, Mr. Whiteside served as chairman of the board of directors of the Police Athletic League of Philadelphia and a board member of the Wissahickon Skating Club.

Mr. Whiteside graduated magna cum laude from the University of Notre Dame and earned his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

Arlene M. Yocum

Arlene M. Yocum
In her position, Ms. Yocum is responsible for providing investment management and related administrative services for retirement plans, including pension, 401 (k) and profit sharing, as well as managing the unique investment and administrative needs of nonprofit organizations.

Ms. Yocum joined PNC Bank in 1990 as senior counsel for the Investment Management and Trust Division, focusing on investment and securities issues. She became product manager for the Corporate Trust Division in 1993, and she was responsible for generating $20 million in annual revenue. In 1995, she was named senior vice president and team manager. During her tenure in this position, she helped initiative the Women’s Financial Services Group to provide more accessible and sophisticated financial services to women throughout the region.

Very involved in the community, Ms. Yocum is a trustee of Peirce College, serving on the Finance and Investment Committee; a member of the Philadelphia Bar Association, where she is chairman of the Finance Committee; and a member of the ALS Association, Greater Philadelphia chapter. She is also a member of the Forum of Executive Women; the South Jersey Chamber of Commerce, Women in Business Committee; and the Pennsylvania Economy League, Leadership Council.

Ms. Yocum earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dickinson College and a law degree from Villanova School of Law.
