Study Abroad

Studying in another country can be one of the most rewarding experiences of a student's undergraduate career. Studying abroad will widen your horizons and provide you with new ways of thinking about the world as you experience a different culture.

Community College of Philadelphia has several study abroad opportunities for its students:

  1. Study Tour of Mérida, México (March 7–14, 2009)
    During spring break, join College faculty and students on a noncredit study tour of ancient and contemporary Maya culture in the around Mérida, México. Visit ancient Maya cities, contemporary Maya villages, museums and much more. The cost for this trip is $790, which includes air, hotel, buses in México, all entrances and several group dinners.   2. Spanish in San José, Costa Rica (May 16–June 6, 2009)
    In this three-week program, students will travel to Costa Rica’s capital, San José. There, they will take one three-credit Spanish course (Spanish 101, 102, 201 or 202) with a College faculty member. Students will stay with a Costa Rican family, where they will experience real Costa Rican culture and food. This trip includes excursions to a volcano, an eco-lodge in a tropical cloud forest and more. This is an affordable, once-in-a-lifetime experience to really learn Spanish and be immersed in the beauty of this Central American country.     Costa Rica Application

  3. Field Study in Belize, Central America (Summer I, 2009)
    Students will earn six credits in Earth Science 111 (Environmental Conservation) and Geography 101 (Physical Geography) during this 15-day course with College professors Margaret Stephens and John Braxton. Students will be housed in Belize’s beautiful Monkey Bay Wildlife Sanctuary and will paddle in tropical rivers, snorkel in the largest barrier reef in the Western hemisphere and hike in the mountains with local experts.   4. Archaeology in Belize, Central America (June 16–July 14, 2009)
    At an archaeology field school in Belize, students and volunteers will live for two weeks (or an optional four weeks) in a tropical forest research camp with participants from several colleges as they explore the remains of a 1,200-year-old Maya archaeological site. There are options available for earning college credit for this experience. Students and volunteers will learn the essentials of archaeological excavation and survey in the outskirts of a recently discovered ancient Maya city under the guidance of a College faculty member.
