Emergency Procedures
In case of an emergency or a fire, an alarm will sound throughout the College's buildings. The alarm is accompanied by flashing red lights for the benefit of individuals with hearing impairments. If the buildings must be evacuated, the alarm will be followed by a steady buzzing sound. Because the escalators and elevators will automatically shut down during a fire drill or a real emergency, never get on an elevator or escalator when the alarm sounds.
At the sounding of the evacuation alarm, faculty will assign two students to assist each student with a disability to a fire tower landing to await further assistance. Do not wait in the hallway of the building. In a real emergency, the fire department will be called. The fire department checks each landing and is responsible for assisting students with disabilities out of the building if necessary. During a fire drill, remain inside the stairwell until others return to the building. Security guards will check these areas. Students should begin to plan their own evacuation routes as soon as they start classes or use the College facilities. Think about how to reach safety at any particular point in your schedule and make arrangements with your fellow classmates, friends and/or instructors for whatever assistance you might need in emergency.
