Library of Congress
Looking for a real National Treasure? Check out the Library of Congress website.  Here you'll have access to webcasts, images, music, teaching resources, newspapers, legislative information and website archiving (i.e. you can view what websites looked like on a specific date - like September 11th, 2001).
Subjects cover the gamut from American history to science and music. Familiarizing yourself with the website will feel like a day spent visiting museums. Use photos, primary sources, videos, podcasts and webcasts to bring excitement to your classroom or identify some resources for students to investigate on their own. Have a question? Try the "Ask a Librarian" feature. Cultural literacy is a click away!

MOOM: The Museum of On-Line Museums

VIEW MUSEUM EXHIBITS ON THE WEB!
Philadelphia had some wonderful local museums - but what if you want your students to see exhibits in far away places? Cheaper than a SEPTA pass and less complicated than coordinating a field trip - the MOOM website can take you and your students to museums across the globe. From conventional to quirky - the museums and exhibits covered by this site are sure to give you and your class something to talk about.
  • Take your class on a field trip without leaving the room
  • Assign homework that sends your students to distant lands to see museum exhibits in art, history, science etc. without having them leave the city.

Mid-20th Century Cigarette Advertisements

viceroy

The Rotunda display has been taken down but the primary source materials are still available. Reproductions of the actual ads can be borrowed by contacting Jocelyn Sirkis, Director of Professional Development. (Should you wish additional support, Jocelyn can also deliver a presentation to your class.)

A larger collection of ads is also available for viewing on -line by visiting http://lane.stanford.edu/tobacco/index.html

This collection lends itself well to classes in a variety of areas including Sociology, Ethics, Art, English, Marketing, Allied Health, Philosophy, History, etc.

Here are some sample essay questions developed by CCP faculty:

1. (for Soc. 101/ESL classes) Which advertisement shocked you the most and why?
2. Ads often persuade through association with attractive people or symbols. Discuss the effect of associating cigarettes with babies, Santa Clause, the American flag, sexy movie stars and the like.
3. Endorsement is a form of association and argument by authority. According to ads for Camels and Luck Strike, thousands of doctors approve of them. How is this type of endorsement similar to, or different from, endorsement by specific singers, movie stars, and other celebrities?
4. Scan the list of "dead celebrities" who had appeared in cigarette ads. What conclusions can you draw?

A Vitual Warehouse of Multimedia and Post-Secondary Ed. Teacher Resources
Arranged by Subject Matter
Does your class need content, visuals, study aids, presentation material or multimedia? Well then, have a Merlot! Merlot.org is a website for educators that provides access to a wide variety of articles, tools and multimedia information. Individual memberships are free. Merlot also offers opportunities for instructors who teach similar courses to network with one another.  Look for a Lunch 'n Lean seminar (coming soon) where faculty members will show how they're using Merlot to create lessons and improve student learning.

Great Places to (Virtually) Go!

Check out these "Destination" websites. They'll take your class to learning places with a wealth of educational resources. Many include virtual field trips and multimedia.
