Jillian Kinzie (Associate Director, Center for Postsecondary Research & NSSE Institute) coordinates the NSSE Institute project activities. Her PhD is from Indiana University in higher education with a minor in women's studies. Jillian comes to the NSSE staff from the faculty at IU where she coordinated the master's program in higher education and student affairs from 2000-2002.She has more than a decade of additional experience as a research associate and administrative work in academic and student affairs.Jillian's research interests include college choice, first year student development, teaching and learning in college, access and equity, and women in underrepresented fields.
Job ResponsibilitiesManage research team conducting field visits to high performing institutions, describe and document effective educational practice, and facilitate the use of student engagement data.
Research InterestsJillian is interested in understanding how institutions use student engagement data and other assessment results to inform improvement efforts in undergraduate education; differences in student engagement by gender, race-ethnicity, and first-generation status; and assessing the impact of programs and practices designed to support student success (learning communities, undergraduate research, service-learning, etc.). She also hopes to continue learning more about emerging issues in teaching and learning; the educational mission of student affairs; MSIs; historically underrepresented students in higher education; women students especially, women in science, math, and engineering, and women's colleges; first-year student development and experiences; and college choice.

Creating Learning Communities to Enhance Student Success will focus on implementation,assessment and outcomes. Jodi will address the benefits of learning communities for promoting student performance and persistence, with practical advice on implementing and sustaining learning communities on your campus.
Overview
Learning communities are becoming a national movement and are being recognized in the higher education research and literature as a powerful strategy for promoting student success across a diverse range of institutions-public, private, 2-year and 4-year. Learning communities are a broad curricular approach that can enhance the student experience in many ways from improving student retention to increasing curricular coherence to creating a greater sense of community between and among students and faculty. Jodi will discuss the following:
Develop
This session will focus on the what, why, and how of learning communities, including an overview of definitions and models. Jodi will talk about how to develop an effective learning community, which will ultimately result in an increase in student success.
Sustain
The benefits of learning communities for promoting student performance and persistence will be the primary focus of this webinar. She will provide practical advice on implementing and sustaining learning communities on your campus.
Assess
Our speaker will walk you through different ways to assess the effectiveness of your learning communities, focusing on the outcome of student success.

The paper is labeled version 1.0, indicating that the framework will continue to evolve as educators apply its concepts and principles and identify ways in which to improve and expand its focus.
