With Harold T. Epps unanimously elected chair, the Board’s new leadership began their terms Sept. 1 

PHILADELPHIA – Community College of Philadelphia has announced changes to the leadership of its Board of Trustees. On Sept. 1, Harold T. Epps, senior advisor at Bellevue Strategies, was unanimously elected chair of the College’s Board. Epps, who previously served as vice chair, replaces Jeremiah J. White, Jr., chief executive officer of White and Associates. White served as chair of the College’s Board since 2015.  

“The College is pleased to officially announce Harold T. Epps as our new Board chair,” said College President Dr. Donald “Guy” Generals. “Harold has decades of experience leading organizations in both the public and private sectors. I look forward to working alongside him as we continue to move the College forward and find innovative ways to continue to support our students.” 

Other members nominated and unanimously elected to Board leadership roles include:  

  • Sheila Ireland, president and CEO of Philadelphia OIC, has been elected secretary
  • Rosalyn J. McPherson, president and CEO of the ROZ Group, Inc., has been reelected vice chair
  • Michael D Soileau, telecommunications executive, has succeeded Epps as vice chair ]
  • “The City’s College is a vital cog in the educational ecosystem,” said Mr. Epps. “I look forward to helping to ensure that it continues to provide the skills and tools that Philadelphians need for a productive life.” 

Consisting of 15 members, trustees are appointed for six years, without compensation, by the mayor of the City of Philadelphia and are responsible for administering and supervising the affairs of the College. The powers and duties of the Board of Trustees are set forth in Section 19-1905-A of the Pennsylvania Public School Code of 1949. 

Throughout his career, Mr. Epps has built a solid reputation in both the private and public sectors. While in the private sector, he has focused on positioning organizations for sustained growth while successfully managing change. Publicly, as director of commerce for the City of Philadelphia, he oversaw and implemented policies to help both small businesses and major corporations in Philadelphia thrive. This includes coordinating activities along neighborhood commercial corridors with small businesses and entrepreneurs, major real estate development projects, large-scale business attraction and retention efforts, as well as efforts to increase minority-owned business contracting opportunities. 

As a senior advisor for economic development at Bellevue Strategies, Mr. Epps continues this work with businesses of all sizes. He lends his expertise to clients through strategic positioning, access to capital, and introductions to his vast network of key stakeholders. In addition, he also serves as a senior advisor with the global search firm Diversified Search, headquartered in Philadelphia. 

His commitment to workforce development and business opportunity, as well as diversity and inclusion efforts, continue to drive his civic and board activities. Mr. Epps serves on the board of many organizations, including Cobbs Creek Restoration and Community Foundation, Economy League of Greater Philadelphia, Public Health Management Corporation, World Affairs Council of Philadelphia, and as chair of First Step Staffing of Philadelphia.  

He previously served on the board of the Philadelphia Inquirer, as an executive committee member of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, the African-American Chamber of Commerce, the African American Museum in Philadelphia, the Urban League of Philadelphia, Comcast National African American Advisory Council, and Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC).  

Mr. Epps holds a bachelor’s degree in Business/Commerce from North Carolina Central University, where he was recently honored with the title of Trustee Emeritus and has served as a trustee for eight years. He also holds an MBA from Western New England University.

PHILADELPHIA – Community College of Philadelphia has announced that its Jr. STEM Academy, in partnership with the Institute for Community Engagement and Civic Leadership, will host its iVote Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 7 at the Great Hall in the Winnet Student Life Building, room S2-19, 1700 Spring Garden Street, Philadelphia, PA 19130. Media call time is 12 p.m. 

Throughout the event, students in grades six to eight from the Alain Locke School will participate in a mock election and vote on sample ballot questions emphasizing the importance of voting. Additionally, students will create poster campaigns depicting their view of an ideal society focused on environmental sustainability, equity, and inclusiveness.  

The voting portion of the program will begin at 12 p.m. and students will vote on the best ideal society in addition to ballot questions surrounding single-use plastic items, increasing the number of community gardens, and if a permanent curfew for children under the age of 18 should be implemented.  

The mock election will mirror that of the election taking place on Nov. 8 where students will present their voter identification card, sign their name on the voter rolls, and then submit their ballot.

Students at Philadelphia’s Alain Locke Elementary School got a chance to cast their ballots the day before Election Day, in a mock vote at Community College of Philadelphia. 

With crime rates continuing to rise in Philadelphia, addressing safety in the streets is at the top of voters’ priorities. Young students participated in a mock election on Monday and spoke on potential solutions to curb gun violence. NBC10’s Karen Hua spoke with those students.  

The College’s Jr. STEM Academy and #CCPVotes partnered to host an iVote Day where students in grades six to eight from the Alain Locke School participated in a mock election and voted on sample ballot questions emphasizing the importance of voting.  

Global Philadelphia had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Donald “Guy” Generals, who is being awarded the 2022 Globy for Educational Leadership. Generals has 20 years of teaching experience and is the sixth president of the Community College of Philadelphia. 

STOCK: Rising. Four stories above 48th and Market, to be exact. The Community College of Philadelphia president just oversaw the opening of the college’s Career and Advanced Technology Center, which will offer classes in automotive technology, manufacturing and health care.
