PennDOT Certifications

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Emissions Inspector Certification workshop is open to individuals without prior emission certification or technical training. Successful completion of the course and test qualifies the individual to inspect and pass/fail a vehicle for emissions certification. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Emissions Inspector Recertification workshop is offered to experienced emissions inspectors seeking recertification. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Safety Inspection Mechanic Training is open to individuals seeking to become a certified safety inspection mechanic.

Emissions Inspector Certification

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Enhanced Emissions Inspector Certification workshop is open to individuals without prior emission certification or technical training. The course includes theory; on board diagnostics II; a written test; and a computer-based, hands-on examination. Successful completion of the course and test qualifies the individual to inspect and pass/fail a vehicle for emissions certification. Participants must bring their photo identification/driver's license to class. Students do not have to be 18 to enroll in the course; however, they must be at least 18 and have a valid driver's license to become a PA certified enhanced emissions inspector. Plan to arrive at the first class 15 minutes early. Note: The 60-minute computer-based test is scheduled additionally at a designated time and date after the last class date.

Emissions Inspector Recertitifcation

This is the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Emissions Inspector Recertification course. Mandatory recertification of all certified emissions inspectors occurs two years after certification. To recertify, inspectors must receive and review written materials, attend the instructional session and pass a written test with a score of 80 percent or more. This course will satisfy all recertification requirements. Bring photo ID/driver's license to class. You may also register at the same address, Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., with payment by check, money order, or credit card; no cash accepted. Plan to arrive at the first class 15 minutes early.

Safety Inspection Mechanic Training

This Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Safety Inspection Mechanic training course instructs participants to inspect motor vehicles under the Vehicle Equipment and Inspection Regulations. Both written and hands-on tactile examinations must be passed for successful completion of the course. All materials are provided. Bring photo ID/driver's license to class. Note: The 60-minute tactile exam is scheduled additionally at a designated time and date after the last class date.

Safety Inspection Mechanic Recertification Review

Safety Inspection recertification is mandatory five years from initial certification. You may renew your mechanic certification by passing the required Pennsylvania Department of Transportation examination within 180 days of notification from the state that your mechanic card is due to expire. This recertification requires you to pass PennDOT’s online exam in order to renew your certification for another five years Recertification Review training provides you the opportunity to review the Safety Inspection Mechanic curriculum with an instructor in an in-class format to answer questions and help to improve your content comprehension prior to taking PennDOT’s online exam.

You must register and pay PennDOT separately, to take the online recertification exam, at https://www.patrainingportal.com/. This review course fee does not include the exam fee.
